    I'd heard this recording. And every time I listen, it makes me wish the UP historic collection included an operating version of this engine class.

    THAT would be cool. As many times as I have chased the UP steam locos, I have grown to love that sound. The 9000's were so unique sounding.

    I never heard any three cylinder engine run, so that recording was very interesting. I don't know where you are located, but as far as I know, the only surviving 9000 is THE 9000, at Pomona Fairgrounds near Los Angeles. I have climbed all over that locomotive, including under it to see how the center cylinder rod connected to the second axle. Quite a system, the Gresley third cylinder. Incidentally, another three cylinder engine is there at Pomona, the Southern Pacific 4-10-2 No. 5021. While we're at it, there is a Big Boy, Centennial diesel, ATSF Hudson, and several other displays. Great place to visit.
