Should I use a 2mm LED in my H0 scale engine headlights or a surface mount LED? Is an H0 scale engine headlight actually 2mm or is it 1.5mm diameter? I am not sure.

Thus far I have used the manufacturer's light tube and a single 3mm or 5mm LED to light the tube, but I am thinking about more specific headlight arrangements. Specifically, I want to change the Athearn SD45T-2 to a headlight and a mars light instead of the original configuration.

So far, it is difficult for me to find 2mm golden white LEDs on the internet.

Thanks for the help and opinions.

Check with Jim at Richmond Controls in Houston. He has a broad range of led's in stock and an excellent knowledge of size requirements.

I like for headlight the usual LEDs. I file them down in size until the are suitable. But for my "Little Giant" Little Giant - SP #1 - TrainBoard.com I've used SMD LEDs. I soldered two of the to a small PC board for the twin headlights, together with 1.5 kOhm resistor.
