Lisa and I were out and about Wednesday including tracking down the Denver, South Park, and Hilltop Railroad around 12,000ft above sea level Find out more at http://rradventures.wordpress.com/
There is not much information on this tiny railroad that came and went with the Silver Mining history of Colorado. Silver was found in Horseshoe Gulch in 1873. Denver, South Park, and Pacific reached South Park, CO in 1879. Mudsill Mine opened in 1880 Hilltop Mine opened in 1887 The town of Leavick, CO founded in 1892 Denver, South Park, and Hilltop completed track up Horseshoe Gulch in 1896 In 1923 with Silver demonetized in 1893 the railroad was abandoned and Leavick vanished with it The DSP&H basically haul ore down to the DSP&P which later became part of the Colorado and Southern. The DSP&H narrow gauge was a bit over 11 miles long
that's quite the grade in your first shot. Wouldn't it be cool to see some GP60's slugging a string of hoppers uphill on that right of way?
