Yes these are fans. Just behind me is a 1 mile long tunnel which is the longest in Indiana. I guess they use these for circulation in the tunnel

Nah, these are just like those bayou boats, that have fans instead of propellers in the water! :p;)
    Nice catch!

Its odd to see some sort of mobile ventilation contraptions. It is hard to for a lot of people to put grades and Indiana in the same category but Duncan tunnel is one of the steepest in Indiana (besides Madison of course!). I've talked to an NS engineer that told me a Dash 9 was only good for something like 2300 tons.

Steve My cousin runs that line and he said sometimes its a killer trying to get up the grade. If I rember right I belive the grade is something like 2.34%!

Indiana's hilly enough for a 2.3% hill? How long is this hill? And where's this tunnel? Any pics of it?

Here is another "railfan" being used on R J Corman's Frankfort tunnel project this Summer. It looks a lot like a jet engine mounted on a dump truck doesn't it? Photo July 18, 2007 Frankfort, KY.

    Cool!
Never seen anything like it before. Most railfans I see are mounted permanently in a structure.....

The hill is pretty long! Id say 3-4 miles. The tunnel is in Georgetown,IN and its set back kinda far away from the road so I have no pics.

I dunno Alex, there are very few tunnels you can shoot directly from the road... I like to hike to a secluded spot, and get my shots..
3-4 miles is a long hill? I guess I am biased--Mullan Pass is a 20 mile 2.2% climb, Marias Pass is 1.8 and 1.4% east and westbound respectively, longer than 4 miles to be sure; Moffat Tunnel route is 2% for 50 miles solid, Sherman Hill is 35 miles of 1.55%, plenty more long climbs out west.
Maybe 4 miles is a long climb in the midwest... :)

Hemi it may be longer then that! Im just guessed on it cause I really aint sure where the grade starts. It maybe be 8-10 miles I dunno. Id hike to the tunnel if I could but im just scared about getting caught tresspassing all the time.

    Is the surrounding area private?
Get landowner permission, should be easy to find the owners.
I'm not encouraging trespassing here, but trespassing on the RR isn't likely to get a person shot at. Some folks out west have been known to do that. One rancher in particular atop Sherman Hill is infamous for shooting at foamers.
