Howdy All! Since I get this notice that until I post a message, I'll continue to get a notice, I decided to say hello for one reason to get rid of the new member notice. I'll be hanging around in the backround for a while as I'm in the planning stage of my next and probably last model railroad.

I've built 3 layouts over the years from 4x8 to 25x25. I got out of the hobby a few years ago, but decided to plunge back in when a deal on boxes of used HO rolling stock, engines, buildings, track, switches, etc just about dropped into my lap. The timing was right, and I have moved into my retirement home with a finished basement just waiting for me to work out a plan to put the equipment I've only seen in boxes so far to the test.

A freelance DRGW mountain layout is what I have in mind. I've had one duck under layout too many so this will be what appears to be a walk in, but will have narrow access isle against walls where needed 'cause I'm not duckin' under a layout again... I've still got bumps on the back of my head from 15 years ago.

I appreciate the time you folks spend answering questions. I doubt I'll need to ask many questions as it appears that most of what I think I want to know has already been addressed. Keep up the great work!

    Welcome to TrainBoard Brian!

I look forward to seeing how things progress with your layout. Don't stay too far in the background. We have a lot of fun up here in the foreground. :p :)

    Welcome at TrainBoard, Brian!

May I give one suggestion. Do you plan to operate your layout with friends? Think about aisles. Mine are too narrow.

Good to have you here, and better yet that you actually respond to those goading messages, Brian. I hope you have a great time falling back down into the hobby.

Thanks for the wonderful welcome! Wolfgang, thanks for the reminder. I've always used 24" (61 cm) for aisleways, but do you folks think that too narrow? I doubt there will be visiting operators, but there will be some visitors now and then.

Welcome aboard Brian - please don't stay in the background, with your experience you can be a big help to modelers like me! Good luck with your new railroad. Sounds like you got an amazing find with those boxes of "stuff". I think I have more fun with finds like that, bringing old equipment back to life. I always wonder at the stories old models like that could tell.

    Welcome aboard!

24" is too narrow for operating aisles in a layout that will ever have more than one person. I don't want to try to pass anyone in a space that narrow. It's acceptable to have aisles that narrow in a small spot on a large layout, so long as there's significant aisle length wider than that.

Aisles to be used purely for construction and maintenance can be even narrower than 2'. For example, I've seen plans for large layouts where the interior aisles are generally wider to allow passing, but where the layout isn't against the walls of the room but with narrow access aisles around.
