I wonder if anyone can answer these questions for me:

What were the names of specific trains that ran from New York City to Des Moines, Iowa in 1929?

Could this be done on a single train or did you have to change trains in Chicago?

How many times a day did these trains run?

    Thanks.

HEY! Alan, Watch that stuff. How old do you think we are?
Really, there are people on here who can answer that. Maybe Watash,
    Fitz or somebody else.

Alan- in 1929 (as always) you had to change trains in Chicago. You could take any number of trains from NYC to CHI 20th Century, or the Broadway Limited or of CHI to De moins you could take the Chicago and North Western Kate Shelly 400 I THINK THERE WAS AN iLLINOIS cENTRAL TRAIN OUT THAT WAT TOO, BUT i HOPE WHAT i HAVE HELPED YOU!!

Thanks a lot. We are writing a mystery in which several of the characters take trains from NYC to Iowa. This helps us be authentic.

Telegrapher, thanks for putting me up there with the seniors. Actually I was born 10 years later, BUT if one really wanted to get from NY to Chi, even in 1929, and had a lot of money ($20 or so) and was in a hurry, the 20th Century Limited on the New York Central was the only way to go.
In 1944, the Century left Grand Central at 5:30 PM and arrived in Chi at 9:30 AM the next day. That and the Broadway from "That other railroad" were the fastest ways to get there. Any local trains would result in much longer times (for your realism).
I can't speak for the connection from Chi to DesMoines. Central did not service DesMoines. ;)

Alan! Welcome to trainboard! I grew up in and around Desmoines myself! I believe the Rock Island Technical Society at Simpson college in Indianola could tell you for sure, contact Dick Tinder there! I 'm almost sure it would of been the des moines rocket! Again Welcome! Rich! :D

Don't mention TrainBoard when you do that or you won't get any help. Seems we were not supposed to have a Rock Island Forum here without their permission - which they did not give.
