Hello all,in the very near future,I'll be getting a 16x24 shed ,to house my new lay-out.The trouble is I don't have auto-cad or anything for that matter to design it .I've tried atlas soft-ware and frankly it sucks. My lay-out will consist of a blast furnace,BOF, rolling mill, ore bridge and pit, coke oven and last but not least a slag recovery. Then through in hump yard, bascule bridge, and a bunch of other stuff. Duh, almost forgot it will be in HO scale.Any help?

Have you looked into Xtrkcad? It's a free program. The web site is: www.sillub.com

I'm not sure if you mean autocad to design the shed or the RR. I'm willing to bet that by the time you are up and running on an auto cad RR designing tool, like Xtrack, you could have designed your layout from scratch on paper.

I kept my paper design loose so that when I built it and something didn't fit - which happened - it was easy to modify my plan. I only designed about 40% of my layout with the remainder left unplanned except for a main line design and some ideas of what would go where. This way, after laying the first 40% of the layout, the experience would enable me to more accurately design the remainder.

A caveat, your shed may not best structure to house the RR. Metal Sheds can get extremely hot in the summer and extremely cold in the winter - I haven't checked to see where you are from, but places like Texas and metal sheds can be a real challenge.

If my description fits your area, make sure to use a base that will not be affect by extreme temperature changes such as foam. You might want to bring your engines into a warmer environment in winter. Just be aware that metal sheds have their own "challenges."

True. One being that I have seen them "sweat." Meaning moisture condenses on the inside, and runs or drips. Special care needs to be taken for allowing the building to breathe. And when insulating.

Patrick, make sure you get a heck of an air conditioner also. Wish I had gotten a bigger one.

Perhaps if your HVAC system includes a good dehumidifier?

Let us know how the Xtrkcad works? Please share any plans for the potential empire!

Hmmmm, If you fear hurricanes maybe you need something out of concrete that is partly undergound like a bunker. I think they still call them basements.

Hi traingeekboy, If I could have a basement I would. Here in Beaufort ,SC ,I live in the highest part of the county.Hell its only 47' above sea level. The county want let anyone build a basement.I like your idea for a bunker, can't stand the people next door anyway. Maybe I'll add a few claymores and mines along with the bunker LOL ....regards Patrick

Actually 16x24 is a nice sized layout room. Good luck with it.

I have to say I'm glad I live near the mountains where I do not have to worry about tornadoes, hurricanes, or tsunami, as far as I know were safe from earthquakes too.
