I know they never had 'em but I just couldn't resist. Here's my version of a Dash 8-40BW in D&RGW. I haven't custom pinted a loco in years, literally, but none of the roads I run had a 8-40BW. As my justification for having one, this was the last new loco D&RGW took delivery of before the merger. In my little world, GE gave D&RGW a "sweet deal" on her to try and break the strangle hold of EMD on the Rio Grande. Hope you all like her.
Thanks for the kind words Ben. I originally picked up the wrong orange. I 1st painted it in Rio Grande Orange and that turned out way to dark. So rather than drive to Memphis to get the correct paint match to the decals, I mixed my own orange to match the decals. All I had to repaint was the walkway stripe and both ends. It's IMHO not a perfect match but close enough for me.
Most of the time, the Grande Gold weathered so quickly with exhaust soot and road grime that you couldn't tell what color it really was! Nice job on that machine--it looks 'Grande to me! The winged radiators look nice with Grande safety chevron stripes.
I'm gonna let it run for a week or 2 before I start weathering it up. I've got a Atlas GP-40 on the way that will need weathering so I might as well do them both at once. You're right about not being able to see what color the pilots were due to the grime, but that original "tangerine orange' was just too much on the side sills. It looked so bad I couldn't bring myself to even post a picture of it. LOL!
And then END "GAVE them this one to brake the GE deal.... You know in real life the D&RGW Did buy a lot of those GE units, its just the owner liked the name recognition of the railroad he bought that he decided to use it instead, so the GE units that the D&RGW bought were painted in SP colors with the Name Southern Pacific on the side in Speed lettering.... .
I like you version of the Big Mac. Where did you get the dark orange decals? I've got a couple SD-45's I thinking about painting next.
These are great. I am disappointed that I cannot pick up a Rio Grande engine in N scale right now. One of them is what I really want. The Rio Grande will be my first custom job that is for sure, I never considered doing a more modern engine till now.
Well now I found one GP35 I will leave the link for you. Hope it helps they may have more but I only checked the GP 7 & 35 for Atlas. http://www.blwnscale.com/ATLAS%20GP30.htm And just to add there is some great work on these models here in this thread.
Jolly & I have something in common. Here's one I prepped a couple years ago along side a SP unit (not finished). This unit is numbered to carry on after the SD50's,(the last of those units numbered 5517).Hence #5518 I did read somewhere that if the DRGW had continued as is,it was "supposedly" looking at buying the SD90,so here's the result.
Very nice, Jason--I have thought about that, too. I fact, I may pick up some SD70ACes, and paint a pair in D&RGW, utilizing a 5600 number series.
I got my Decal from Warren's Train Shop in Ogden, there were Microscale Decal 60-28. MY SD90 has a mate it will run with, it SP 9011. I was going to do both as SP but I found those D&GRW dacals so I did the 2nd one up for Rio Grande. I have made up many SP units that never were, this was my Only Rio Grande unit.
Why no availability of this Road?? Does anyone know why there appears to be a serious lack of availability for this particular roadname?? Or is it that each Southwestern Road takes a turn being the orphan?biggrin:
From the reading up I did on D&RGW, they did not have a lot of variety in models of locos. This probably limits the offerings from the manufacturers. I could be wrong but that's my take on the subject. I've still got a few more decals to add, builder's plate, etc. The small details like that really help break up the long black hood and add interest. Continued thanks for all the nice comments. I'm really kind of proud of it, I literally haven't painted up a loco in 6 or 7 years.
UPC - Nice job on the fantasy. Jolly - your fantasy brought my own to mind. Too bad we can't mu the three cool fantasies with this ( my ultimate ) fantasy: Pardon me for hijacking your thread.
Carl! That C44 in Black Widow is just too cool!!! The Zebra Stripes on the fuel tank really adds to the model. I love it! All these customs get my finger itchin' to grab the airbrush and decals again.
