WSOR SD40-2's N Scale

I have long been a WSOR modeler in HO Scale and N Scale for over five years now. Recently I purchased Kato's WSOR 4004 and 4006. Once receiving them I started thinking about renumbering so that I could get a third power. I soon decided that I would renumber the 4004 to 4007 and then buy a new 4004. Therefore I now have three WSOR sd40-2's. Here is a photo of the one I renumbered to 4007. Tell me what you think!!!!

 

Did you change the number boards too?

 

No not yet I will when I have time but the main portion is done. It is going to be hard to do number boards in N scale but I'll manage to get it done.

 

Nice work there neighbor....lol. Jetco's Hiawatha Hobbies in Waukesha may still have a few 4025s in their case. It is a shame Butch on East Lake St. passed away a few years ago he had a custermer that paintied WSOR units. I picked up 2 GP20s and 3 SD40s really cheap.

 

I here you about Butch, I used to be very good friends with him. I live in Horicon so thats were I always went.

 

how much does jetco's ask for one of those 4025's? i didn't know they had them.

 

I live in Burnett that was the closest to go for all of us in this area. I paid $195 for the 4025 but it did have operating ditch lights also. That was a few years ago, they may atleast get ytou the custom painters info if they are sold out.

 

what I actually did for this unit is took the numberboard decals out of an HO scale SRG WSOR decal kit since i am also a HO scale modeler. it worked out great!!!!

 

They were in the custom painted case a few years ago. I paid $195 with operating ditch lights. If they don't have any in stock I can give you contact info on who painted them. I don't know what you have to do to print decals, or do u print them on paper? If so then how to u attach them?

 

All I remember Butch saying it was someone that lives west of Portage that would trade n scale locomotives he custom painted to get HO stuff.

 

Some people print them on adhesive label stock and just stick them on. A light spray of flat or gloss sealer to help keep them put.

Won't the gloss over coat mess with normal paper?

 

Unfortunately the Freight Yard is out of business. The models they did were only marginally more accurate than Katos. I still haven't seen anyone get the roof right (top of the long hood is grey, cab roof is red).

For the number boards I make them with decals, but I have made them on avery mailing stickers. Either way I cover them with Micro-Glaze to seal and protect them.

 

I may be wrong, but can I suggest that it you happen to take your locos apart, you spray the handrails and walkways with dullcoat? From the pictures they almost look pearlescent, I'm assuming from Kato's manufacturing process.

 

The handrails in the photo are straight from the factory. They did a injection molded red therefore the color is way off. They got a lot of complaints for it, and if you ask me we should be able to expect better from such a well known company. Even if I use a flat overcoat on it the color will still be off if I were to choose to correct the walkways and hand rails I would just paint the whole piece that includes walkways and hand rails. It is hard to match any factory paint when it comes to the WSOR. Although where I renumbered It i touched it up and u don't notice it (but thats in a very small area). I'm not sure if I should paint that whole piece or not. When you start painting larger areas it is more noticeable that the paint is not a match, but than again my red is a closer match than Kato's red plastic.
