Considering that I've only used 2/3'rds of the storage unit for them and my next layout is still in the planning & design stage, somewhere between too many and not enough.
With the recent addition of an AT&SF Erie Built Warbonnet ABA set, I'm up to about 60 locomotives. About 200 freight cars. And 6 different Kato passenger trains and one Kato Sud Est TGV (Orange & Gray).
I created an Excel spreadsheet to print out an itemized sheet of the models contained in a box (it's geared primarily for storage of models). If anyone's interested in it, PM me with your email address. Dieter
I don't have an accurate count, but I have a display case 12 feet long with 24 shelves mostly filled with various line of passenger consists, also sveral freight shelves, each with about 30 cars plus engines and cabooses: reefers, boxcar brown boxcars, Hooker tank cars, C&O (self lettered and painted) hoppers, and a C&O boxcar train with about 15 cars. There are more. There are at least 35 passenger consists of various lengths, each in a different road name. All trains are from pre-1960's era. Collecting since 1968. First car was a B&M Rapido boxcar, I still have. There are 4 more smaller display cases (I made myself) with mostly locomotives, grouped by builder and model. Good luck collecting. PMBaba
OMG, last time I counted it was just under 700 freight cars. I stopped buying for a while, but resumed, as always happens, after I compared my fleet to the 2000 proto rosters and found out I had way too many box cars and not enough tank cars, covered hoppers, etc. I bought more of those, but only sold a few boxes, so I am probably closer to 800 now. Then, I went on a coil car buying binge for my new IHB layout, but I don't think I bought enough to top 900.
At last count I had over 2200 freight cars (most are Kadee/ MT) and about 150 Kato and 70 Rivarossi passenger. And I still need a bunch of boxcars for the layout. Rodney
My current inventory indicates 253 engines and 991 freight and passenger cars. All carefully packed away until I can section a portion of garage for my next layout.
I don't know what I have any longer!! Last time I started counting freight cars, I lost count at 300 cars. More locomotives than I really need!!! Passenger cars are holding fairly steady. Have no idea how many, unless I start counting again! But, still adding a couple of the Lowell Smith AFT cars. I'd be a bit afraid to find out what I do have!! In N Scale and 3 rail in particular. G Scale hasn't gotten too far out of hand. Yet! :teeth:
592 HO Scale Freight Cars 10 Superliners 112 Engines 123 N Scale Freight Cars 4 Passenger 43 Engines Yep, I'm addicted.... Cheers, Brian
Not a 100% sure- but- I'm at about 1500 freight cars, a couple hundred passenger cars. somewhere around 450-500 locomotives. And growing!! Have I mentioned-- I could use a few AS616's. Have a good one, Wolf
Another interesting twist would be to include how long you have been in N scale. for instance, my 900 cars is spread over 24 years, or 37.5 cars per year. If you include broken cars, sold off cars, replaced with better (i.e. Con Cor to MT or IM auto racks) etc., it might hit 40 or 50 total purchased per year. Somehow, that makes me seem more sane and reasonable than a bulk total of 900......Of course, at today's average prices, it's still nearly $800 per year in freight cars, but probably only $500 a year over time.
I've been in N scale about 4 years and have approximately 100 freight cars, 20 passenger cars and 10 DCC-equipped engines. There are another 30 freight cars and 10 DC engines that I need to unload. Jim
Great idea Jeff to include "How long" I've been modeling N-scale since 1976. When I started, there was not a hobby shop within 100 miles that carried n scale, so my first purchase was mail order from America's Hobby Center out of NY. I started with a B-mann northern, a few of their cars, Atlas flex and turnouts. I happen to get to a shop that had a few Kadee cars and bought almost all of them. I still have the northern and 2 of the original cars I bought. Rodney
Not enough. Far too many. More than I will a year from now. I restarted about when I joined Trainboard.
Well, since this topic was started, I have decided to actually slim down by a few diesels and a couple of dozen cars. I just don't need that many any more, doing T-Trak.
