    Craig,
if you want some more modern equipment for those railers [IMG] Take a look at a simple bash that you can do with the Kato GP50(mine is minus the fuel tank in the pic). The GP50 was designed perfectly for this operation and a lone 50 would easily handle 20 or so, model and prototype. Well have a good one, Justin

I am still anxiously waiting for my roadrailers but I'm sure they will be worth the wait

I have a train of 20 triple crowns, and 6 Amtraks on order. They are by far my best tracking train. I am very happy with my purchase.

I am equally impressed by their running ability and detail. Some flat black paint and weathering would make them indistingusable from the prototype. My usual critiscism towards products has been stopped dead by these pups. Definetly a worthwhile investment!

I emailed George Johnson yesterday in regards to the Swift roadrailers and received the following response today

    Hi Paul-

Happy you have the set on order, as that helps us know how many to make. The Swifts are scheduled after the Amtrak run we are currently doing, so that puts them farther than 90 days out. The hold up is on Swift's end, as they have not approved our use of their logo as yet. Since this is an active company that requires permission before printing, we have to operate at their schedule.

Rest assured that we will make a big sound when the sets are immanent, as we, more than any one, want these out! :) (I model the I-5 corridor where they run)

All I have to say is I'm sure they will be worth the wait and thanks to George for replying to SWIFTly lol

Just like to give Deluxe a pat on the back about the Roadrailers especially George who is always so helpful in any questions I have had. The RRers are great and hope to get some of the amtrak trailers for my KATO superliner train... whenever that is done!

Just purchased 2 sets of Triple Crown roadrailers and need to paint them. Looks like grey wheels and white bumpers from the sites I have found. Does anybody know the color of the landing gear and the underframe? Thanks.

    HI John,

I have two 10 packs of the Triple Crowns and the landing gear and wheels are cast in black plastic (delrin). Great looking train! :D

Never mind Craig. I did not read your post correctly. Is Mike correct on the color of the landing gear and underframes-I notice he has a question mark behind black.

    Thanks John!

The landing gear comes black and I am 99% sure that is appropriate. I can't think of any other color they would paint it. I need to go through each of my cars and paint the rim/hub cap (sorry for the improper termonalogy) silver.

BTW, I WISH I had 100 of these things! LOL

Well I've never in my life seen the underframes of trucks any other color. Of course weathering pays a heavy toll overall on the color, but black is appropiate.

Reason for the ? was that I was thinking of containers at the same time and wondering if Roadrailers were in fact a one piece body, which their not.

If I could make a suggestions, paint the underframes normal engine black, but paint the tires either grimy black (used) or a shiny black for brand new ones. Such a smaller color diffrent does wonders.

    Mike

I appreciate the advise Mike. I'll try the 2 different blacks- that sounds a pretty simple trick. By the way some truck underframes are painted grey. Years ago PFE actually finised theirs off in silver or aluminum-hard to keep looking good. John

    John,
I used to spend many a nights hostling trailers and can provide some insight here if you would like. THe underframes of the trailers used in line haul or over the road trucking are usually GRAY rather than black. I would use a mix of earth, sand, and cut with scarlett gray and steam power black mixed to achieve the appropriate colorations. Landing gear can and usually is the color of primed steel rather than black as it is cost effective for the company. Here you should use gobs of Oily black on the gear, as most are fashioned in such a way that the feet of the gear are placed on a sliding mechanism which retracts into a larger diameter post, which requires Graphite impregnated axle grease....the nastiest substance known to a hoslter. Moving on to the axles, the rims of most trailers/pups are either new or old, and the idea of using two color variations will give you realistic results. I would go a step further and apply a drybrushing of Rustall or Polly scale Rust- read it as VERY Lite application of this so as to bring out the spokes and hubs. Have a look at the trailer which I weathered below and note the rust patterns and bogies.....the correct term for a set of axles [IMG] Hope this helps and feel free to ask any and all questions concerning trailer operatons, as I have not run into a trailer that was Clean or immoveable..... :D Y'all have a good one, Justin

Note: the photos are prior to applying the rust to the bogie....Those are misplaced somewhere in the depths of my hard drive

Looking good! John, look at the diffrent colors employd and how realistic everything looks. Even if you dont weather your stuff be sure to dullcoat or give everything a flat finish.
