There wasn't really enough traffic to keep one railroad company alive- and they mostly leased from the B&M (which took the profitable runs IIRC and left them the dross). They were locally famous for being friendly and helpful, but that didn't get them much more business.

There were some colorful stories about the way they operated... apparently there was one wooden trestle that was so poorly maintained that the crews would stop the train at one side, set the throttle to a slow crawl then walk across before the train got to the bridge. They were so sure that the train was going to take that bridge down some day!

another story I read was of a deer hunter who got a deer rather far from town but near the tracks. The Blueberry Express milk run was passing by and saw him, so they stopped the train, helped him load the deer and took him to town. He said, "Try getting that kind of service from the B&M!"

I've heard this story about several different places and roads.

Yes sir, that story was told to me many times from the few people I knew who were hired on that branch. It was like the New England version of Hooterville Canonball! That bridge was in Suncook if I remember right. I was also told storys by the late great Harry Frye that an old steam locomotive de-railed and crashed into a granite quarry. Tales of six foot long rattle snakes have kept people out of the quarry for many years. As a young kid hearing tales of six foot rattle snakes in NH I took as sci-fi, but I talked to a man at a NH train show that swore up and down it was true.

I have a book on the Suncook Valley RR aka Blueberry Express. Truth is stranger than fiction. The Suncook Valley RR would never hold up to some of the rivit counters we see:eek:mg:
