Just a wee bit of a breeze now and then! (As he leans into the breeze just keeping his nose off the ground!)
Long ago, while I was awaiting a westward train, crawling up very blustery Marias Pass, I grabbed this view of the Rockies at Bison, Montana:
From 09/22/1991, the Columbia, Newberry & Laurens bridge at Laurens, SC. It's gone today, a victim of CSX having made improvements to connect its lines in the area.
From 04/12/1988 at Prichard, WV on the former N&W main. Nice composition, great light and despite a long and patient wait, NO TRAIN.
It still stands and clears stack trains without modification. I've never been back there, would be an all day drive.
I would really enjoy seeing a picture of this facility, when it was in use. It must have really been something very interesting to see!
Cool it's still there, but probably too costly to remove nowadays. Back in the day, you'd just shut the line down for two hours and blow it up and clean! Nowadays, you need an army of people just for the permits, enviro impact, study's, blah blah blah....
Neither picture is very good, but this is all I could find on the Internet. Another N&W coaling tower is intact at Farm, WV.
It's below zero and before dawn at Control Point 203.0, BNSF KO Sub. A bad ordered Superliner is set out in a spur track:
The sun crests the horizon in line with the ex-Soo Line tracks at MP 468 on the CP Portal Sub, the last day of January 2023.
Some signals, signaling! At the east end of Laurel yard, Huntley's east end. These signals haven't got too many years left before SF changes them out... And just west of Forsyth, they raise from yellow to green! Train is on it's way!!
