Sure looks desolate. Forgotten. Hard to believe any crack passenger trains ever traversed these rails.

Milepost 49: 49 miles from what? Butte? Livingston? Bozeman?
    • EspeeEngineer
I would guess either Livingston or Bozeman because the further west you go they increase

Now that I think about it and looking at some map I think its 49 miles from the junction in Logan, MT
    • HemiAdda2d
Logan was the junction to Helena, and Mullan Pass...

Mileposts were numbered from east to west.

Logan to the station of Homestake, was 61 miles. So what the 49 means?

Apparently, the line over Mullan was considered superior to Homestake, correct? That seems plausible, considering the mileage count was based from a diverson off the transcon mainline. Were the mileposts ont he transcon main numbered from St Paul?

East of Butte, there was no business on line. Whereas via Helena, there were industries. With the copper industry going down hill, and passenger service essentially all that was left...

The only business on the west slope of Homestake would have been sagebrush harvesting. :p
