My current layout is an attempt to model the hometown (Westville, NJ) area in which I grew up. It is placed in the 1950s, when the Pennsylvania - Reading Seashore Lines was a thriving 2 and 3 track mainline (on the secondary Millville "branch"). It was also designed for operations with the focal point being the Woodbury (where I went to High School) which was an active junction where 3 branches joined together . My musings/ramblings on its construction can be found at: http://rickb773-prsl.blogspot.com/

My previous layout (http://www.myrrlayout.com/R/Aspfiles/DetailPage.asp?Xfer_Code=20001280) was fictitious branch of the PRR up the Delaware River from Philadelphia to Allentown, PA. It was an expansion of my original 4'x8' layout (Haven branch of the PRR) which allowed me to model a yard similar to that of Carl Appel's Norfolk and Ohio.

It also was designed for operations.

Went with #8. Not much in the way of operations on my small layout. But modeling a fictional town on the Panhandle line from Pittsburgh to Columbus is the final goal. Of course the reason is to enjoy creating the scene.

I'm impressed with the layouts I see here but not so impressed with the poll. Never mind I was once on a hospital committee where we designed a questionnaire to gauge patient satisfaction. I think we need a tutorial on how to set up a poll. Grin!

Anyway, I built my layout to please me (Whatever that is) and not to please anyone else. So, it has a category all of it own.
Fun Thread and some great responses.

I agree with my old friend Barstow Rick. We go back a long time together. I designed my large N scale layout for my own satisfaction and no one else. Photo's of my layout are online for others to look at and enjoy if they those please to do so.:cool:

    Shades,

Good to hear from an old friend. It's true we've seen toy train and model railroad fads come and go. With many modelers building to satisfy others. This hobby, is one where we can express ourselves to our own satisfaction. Build anything we want any way we want. I guarantee it's about the only place you can do that. Otherwise you are pleasing your boss, spouse (same difference) kids, grand kids, uncles, aunts, grandma and grandpa unless you have unwittingly became a part of that establishment.

It is never my place to tell you or anyone else how you should build your model railroad or to what standards. It is your railroad, you make the rules and only you set the standards. Number one rule is to have fun.

    Vadimav,

I sure like what you have done with your model railroad. Some fine workmanship and craftsmanship. Salute.

I think, that You can suggest another important entrances for a poll.

In general, aims may be sequentally graduated as:

    A) To have a fun (only for emotional drammatisation of good incendents, which You received in past track of time)

    B) To have a satisfaction(more widely, includes for fun, but adding completion of other cycles like completion of layout made, completion of your engineering task...)

    C) To have a benefit/profit (more widely)

    D) To have more stable survival for railroads/model railroads(for railroad personal training, right knowledge propogation among peolpe, right advertisment for children...etc )

    E) Engineering aims and ideas for railroad/model railroad for it's improvements (Modelling in terms of physics, not in terms of copying as in diorama case)

As to me - I m interesting to communicate with people, who like "E)"

    Well, gosh dang darn it.

Vadim, now that is a very interesting poll. Put it out there and see what happens.

The one thing I like about it...is...the options available are diversified. Nice!
