I log in from dozens of computers from around the university I attend. Our university computer accounts are set up to dump cookies whenever someone new logs in or out. I've never been able to stumble upon this reported issue. I'd love to do what I can to help, but...repeat: Getting upset and storming off isn't going to fix it.
See I'm wondering if he's having the same problem I'm having. Want me to make a screencast showing the steps and the results? Won't take much effort at all and maybe it'll help with the debugging?
Oh, and also, just for clarity's sake, I'm in no way complaining. I can work around the problem with ease so it's not hindering me. I just saw others having troubles and want to help from a technical POV. Thanks as always for a great resource!
Yup. If he lands elsewhere, if they're using vB 4.1.4 again, he'll likely find the same results. vB is rather widely used..... We cannot fix individual browser/user troubles. We can try to help with suggestions, but not with the above type of action. Instead, I'm going to grab some chow and work on a module.
OK guys, here's the screencast: http://dev.checkertaxistand.com/photos/tb-login.mp4 This is Firefox on Ubuntu Linux (results the same on Windows and in IE, Firefox and Chrome). I start by clearing all of the cache (and I can also force remove any cookie, tried that too). Then I open the site (www.trainboard.com) and am redirected to /grapevine/. I log in, then am redirected, then redirected again to /grapevine/ where I'm told I don't have sufficient permissions. Notice no Home button in the nav. Then I click on Forum and I get the forum, still no Home button (doesn't show up at all while logged in).
Oops, wrong encoder, hold a minute I'll fix it up... UPDATE: fixed, converted to MP4 instead for greater compatibility (see link above)
GOT IT! OK, I was looking around through the user settings when I found a setting called "Permission Groups". The option available, which was "Cattle Car Passenger" was listed as available for me to join the group. So, I joined and now it works! When I log out and back in, my account lands me on the "Home" page, with information, advertisements, etc. And the "Home" button in the nav is back, too.
So this makes me think maybe you should check to see that all users are at least included in the Cattle Car Passenger group (currently in the database and by default for new members, which is probably how it already is). I never knew how it was for my user before since I hadn't checked out my Permission Groups status, but I hadn't ever changed that so something must've happened at some point. Perhaps this'll fix up anyone else that's having these troubles?
Hey this worked for me, too. I wasn't having any problems getting to the site, but I had lost the link to the Home button. It is back after joining the "Cattle Car Passenger" group. Thanks PW&NJ!
Gonna steal Charlie's Line here, but all Cattle Car is is the off topic forum, it shouldn't have any bearing on the model railroad forums, and to my understandingt in iisolated so that controversial conversations only show up to people who are expecting them to be there.
Correct. It is for chatting about sports, vacations, other hobbies, etc, etc. However, as we are a family oriented site, the usual applies: Politics, profanity, race, religion and sex are not allowed. It is set up as an option after some testing and discussion showed that as our best choice, done many years back. Boxcab E50
The way it's set up makes perfect sense to me, but that doesn't change that when I'm not a member of that group, my home button goes away and I get the permissions error on login. So something in the permissions for viewing the home page (/grapevine/) is preventing me from viewing it when not a member of Cattle Car. And yet /grapevine/ is visible when not logged in at all. Is there a permission requirement for /grapevine/ that's been set to require a base level of membership? Or perhaps /grapevine/ has mistakenly or erroneously through some database problem been set to block access to the "Registered" group? I don't have access to your admin console of course, but I could quickly set up a dev site to see what the default configuration is and analyze the database settings.
To all Administrative members of TrainBoard, As I was scrolling through this thread I noticed that the OP has not replied to any of the suggestions stating that he can not get back on without getting an error message. This is most likely because he have become frustrated and has not returned to see the suggestions posted. So I have to ask a question. Has any of the Administration emailed or PMed him to try again and not leave TrainBoard because of a possible software glitch? Gary
Gary- All the time. It's a rare day when we are not contacting multiple people, trying to resolve something. And it's stunning how often there is, for whatever reason, no response. We have no way of knowing what happened, so must simply move ahead. Boxcab E50
That is good to know. I have been with other groups that no one cares if a member goes or not. Thanks for the reply, Gary
