Being airbrushless, I just finished up a brush-painted loco set. I feel like they came out ok? Just need GMM stirrup steps. My least favorite part? thinning (and keeping mixed) the dullcote. Works miracles at a low viscosity. This is scalecoat II paint, which lays smooth when thinned 20% and brushed with even strokes. Also, the shells are hiding the DCC frames which make these old boys pull a TON!
Right now I'm preparing to paint and decal some GM&O 50' plug door boxcars and a few Short-line rib side cars. Both are Roundhouse/Athearn shells however I haven't been able to obtain any underframes for these cars. If anyone knows a source, feel free to chime in. If I can't locate the metal roundhouse underframes, I'll have to see if the MTL ones will fit and then try to locate some of those. Thanks, Mike
I am amazed you can get this kind of finish with a brush! What's your secret? BTW, that Loewy two tone green is a gorgeous scheme! Thanks, Otto
Honestly, the work some of you do with brushes astounds me. I use an airbrush (not the best) but still cant match results like this.

Thank you guys! Honestly, it's more trial-and-error than anything. A quality paint is important. Also I have found helpful, I thin 20-30% and clean-off the brush every few strokes, stirring paint equally as often. Lastly? I never paint more than a section or two at a time. The F and GP units make it easy- I do the lower sid epanels, then the upper side/grill, then the roof, then the nose/cab. Each time I let it dry almost fully, and two coats will do it (a day between coats so the thinner paint doesn't ruin the work underneath). I'll be donig a couple more Kato F units next week, maybe I'll photo or film a quick-and-dirty how-to And of course they'll be Loewy green!
Please do. I have some undecorated Kato PA-1 and PB-1 shells coming soon that I'll need to do something with.
No photo yet...BUT....just finished NP 1740 a 24' woody. Started painting a SP&S standard length wood caboose. Think it will be #3450, but got to check my numbering, Starting to size a WP braced cupola caboose. These had passenger steps it appears.
Latesd Projects A trio of Milwaukee with the corect short tanks. Still working on my Amtrak Cascades. Also finished my Slugs for the BN & BNSF and more GN Big Sky Blue passenger cars Paul PnP Trains www.pnptrains.com
Looks Good! I have 10 of these box cars that I will get to some day. Plus one GP38 engine As of now they just have a quickie, lite chalk dusting just to take off the shine.
NP Caboose NP #1740. First photos of just com-leted NP 34' wood caboose. 'Bashed' from an Atlas standard offset cupola caboose. Features glazed windows new stack, brake cylinder and upright hand brakes. All rails, ladders and grabs are brass. I see from the photos I've got some touch-up work to do!!!!!!!
First attempt at hand painting... lines arent sharp but oh well. Still needs work but I thought I would get this early stage up. Life-Like GP-18 mech, frame and front end. Atlas GP-9 long hood and I dont remember where I got the winterization hatch.
Paul, how'd you do the Milw units? And for the BN and BNSF units, those are not slugs, but cabless units. Slugs do not have any engine in them to create power but gets it from the parent unit. Cabless units are just like any other unit, just without a cab or controls.
My workbench at this moment is my laptop with layout design software. working up a profile for the Walthers Cornerstone Roundhouse and 120' turntable with attached shop buildings. the challenge is to make all compatible as the roundhouse stalls are at a 7.5º angle and the software only offers a 10º angle turntable. will be using this to design locomotive facilities and yard section of layout i hope to be building in a few months. I am modeling N Scale with much of focus on PRR and other Eastern railroads that will feature 4 areas: Steel Mill, Passenger Station/Terminal, Coal Mining, and Concrete manufacturing. The passenger service will (in my rulings) include trains from the Western part of the country as well as the mid-western region, while the urban areas will be loosely portions of Philadelphia and Reading. I hope y'all are having a great holiday weekend! Gary L Lake Dillensnyder, Collegeville PA
Here is a quick progress update. Now it's just down to adding the details, number boards, and the side-sill handrails. I was disappointed to see that Micro-Scale didn't put all of the GP-18 numbers together so I settled on 1753 to minimize the number of small decals I would have to add (I originally planned on doing 1752 but the 5 and 2 were seperate).
