    Hello All,

I'm new to Z Scale but, have modeled in HO and N scale previously.

I want to build a layout with a foam board base and utilize MTC track with roadbed.

What is your opinion of MTC track compared to Rokuhan, Marklin and new Atlas flex track?

What is the best method for adhering track to foam board ? Liquid Nails ?

Who makes the best ballast in Z ?

What is your opinion of the new Atlas switches in Z ?

Regarding switches, who makes the best performing switch out of the box?

Does anyone make ground throws for Z switches ?

    Thanks,

    David

    David,

    Welcome to Z.

MTL track is a good model of U.S. prototype track. The roadbed track is limited in section types, 2 radii both 45 degree. The switches are close tolerance and can be finicky. If you search here, you'll find a number of threads discussing the issues and solutions. The flex track is a good choice and works well.

Rokuhan has the largest selection of sectional types in both wooden and concrete ties. The tie pitch is non-U.S. and to some not realistic. They currently make the best performing switches, but they are a bit tricky to control if you aren't using Rokuhan hardware.

There's a half dozen ways to mount the roadbed track. I like using double-sided foam tape cut in small pieces. It's not permanent, but I've found scenery glue used around it locks it down. For non-roadbed track, yes liquid nails.

Don't know about Atlas switches, they haven't been released yet. These are #6 turnouts and not directly interchangeable with any of the other brands mentioned.

Micron Art makes an operational ground throw kit. I'm only aware of it being tested on some hand-made switches, but I'm hopeful it will work with Atlas. There are various makers of dummy ground throws.

    Hope this helps,

    Mark

    Welcome to Z.
Things have never looked better. I use white glue mixed with a dab of paint to adhere the track. Once it is ballasted it will be solid. There is a recent thread about converting Marklin turnouts to "under the table" ones using the switch machine (or not) of your choice. I will be trying this method. I have a lot of Marklin turnouts. Their starter sets usually come with a couple. We've all been waiting for the Atlas switches. We will see. The geometry is different than the Marklin, MTL, etc...I find Peco makes the best flex track. My modules are entirely foam. Some 2" and most 1". I use gatorboard, a type of foamcore that is solid, as the base instead of plywood. I use liquid nails to glue the two together. Hope to see you around. Enjoy. Jim
