Bulbs presently available for my workbench lamp have regular screw bases that are too short for the socket in my lamp. The bulb on the right in the photo below is the original and the only available replacement on the left. Is there anything available to adapt the shorter base bulb to the socket of my lamp? I already thought of putting pennies in the socket but would rather not. Thanks, Ben
There are extender dealy-bobs that screw onto the bulb and then into the socket, the idea being you can extend the height of certain lamp shades that "sit" on the bulb top. Don't know what they are called. Lighting supply stores might have them.
Not knowing what to ask for either, the narrower neck of an incandescent bulb fits into the socket at least for the time being. Except for lower wattage and heat. I was unable to get any satisfaction from Daylight Company, the manufacturer of the lamp who also supplies replacement bulbs. They stated unequivocably that the lamp design "has not changed in design nor is there a different light bulb for this model." Seeing ain't believing to them it seems. Ben
Could you trim down, the top of the the lamp socket ?, so that the new lamp does,nt bottom out before making contact. Ronzzr11
What is the arrangement for the centre contact in the fitting? If it is a separate piece rather than part of the base, these can be bent upwards sometimes to increase contact. In your case it would be to allow for the slight difference in length. I would caution against placing anything in the base. The chances of a short between active and common are very high. May not cause a problem in the lamp, per se, but will at the distribution board having to reset a breaker or replace a fuse.
I would examine the lamp socket to see if the tab for the hot lead can be bent up to accomdate the new base. Also, I would try to find a lamp extender as described. It's a standard product at the Home Depot. It should be able to adapt to the old socket and support a wider variety of normal bulbs in it's socket. Failing those to I would do as Boxcab suggests and buy a new socket and replace it.
There are adapters for these bulbs. I have them in a couple of lamps. If I remember correctly, I got mine at Home Depot. eagle37
I decided to try to find the extender. Trimming the plastic enclosure molded around the metal socket would not shorten it enough. The shade is attached by a ring that screws onto the plastic enclosure so replacing the socket would require redesign of the shade attachment. Thanks to all. Ben
Flash, I don't have a camera this weekend but an extender of this type should work. And if HD doesn't have I can order online. It is made for compact fluorescent bulbs which I have. Ben
Ben- The extenders are availble. I wouldn't be using currency to extend the distance. If something shorts and perhaps you are not there, you might be looking for a new place to live.
I promise I won't. But I did learn some terminology. The bottom tip of a light bulb is a "foot contact." The thingy in the bottom of the socket that the foot contact contacts is a "contact spring." And the extender can be called a socket extender or a light bulb extender depending on who you ask. Not enough to go after an electricians license but I can go to HD not sounding like a complete dummy. Ben
