I've been daydreaming about a very urban mid-steam layout in N, with narrow roads and tall brick structures. Buying kits would bankrupt me but I do have the time and interest (if not the skill) for scratchbuilding. Does anyone know where I might pick up sheets of blick walls, windows, fire escapes et al? Thank you.
DPM sells modular kits. Check out Wig-Wag, they have a sale going on them i think. Have all kinds of brick walls, some with windows, some with overhead doors, etc. check out the link: modular kit
Hm. That looks promising- neither as expensive as kits that I would bash anyway, nor as difficult as full-on scratchbuilding. Thank you. I'll scrape together my pennies and buy a bunch.
Slaters in the UK and Faller in Germany make brick pattern styrene sheets. The Slater's range have a few sheets in 2mm (N). Also, check out the DPM modular wall range. Windows can be scratchbuilt easy enough though you might want to use Grandt Line castings for those that are 'up front'. Scratching most will lessen the cost markedly. Fire escapes may prove to be not so easy to scratchbuild and the only option is to use those etched by Gold Medal models and the like. Check the Walthers cattle dog for what is available and use that as a guide. Give scratchbuilding a go - it's surprisingly simple.
Hi Gary, Great info. I was wanting to scratch build a building for my town that has a curved back (to fit the available space). The brick pattern styrene sheet sould do the trick!' Thanks
There is a place called Colorado Model Structures that sells sheet brick. The CMS2001 is HO brick but it is a very small pattern (much smaller than the brick on many N scale kits). I use it a lot for N scale buildings. It is also very inexpensive.
