I'm just wondering who here are employed by a Railroad or are in the rail industry? I have 22 years experience in signalling and I'm currently employed as a Signal Engineer. Who else are members here and what do you do?
I have just learned of this site. This type forum is new to me so I might make a few mistakes before I get the hang of it. Personly I`m a 31 year vet. engineer of csx, hired by former scl.
Burnfuel, welcome to Trainboard its great seeing new members posting here. If you require any help about this site feel free to email me, we also have a FAQ page that may answer some of your queries. As a CSX engineer i'm sure your contributions to the CSX forum would be very much appreciated. Once again welcome to Trainboard [ 04 January 2002: Message edited by: Colonel ]
i am an engineer for the norfolk southern (currently of injured) between stints of being bumped back to the ground, been there since 96.
I'm also an engineer, based out of Denver, CO. DRGW and now UP. Heading into the East Portal of the Moffat Tunnel. Fall 1994.
23 years in rail signalling. Currently working an emergency response unit in the Sydney Metro area. Gary.
Mike, great photo ... you guys get all the fun! By the way, what is the white reflection in the bottom half of the portal opening? Surely it's not the opposite end some 8-9 miles away
Hank, The "white reflection in the bottom half of the portal opening" is the headlights reflecting off the door. It sits about 100' inside the tunnel to facilitate venting and is open only for train movements. Also the tunnel is only 6.2 miles long
Mike, great pictures, is the door interlocked with the signalling system to ensure the door is opened before the signals are cleared?
Finally retired after 25 years in signal department of Boston & Maine, 19 years as FRA signal inspector and 6 years consulting. Gil
Gil, Welcome to trainboard its always good to see new members posting for the first time, it is even more special to see another signalling person join Trainboard. Maybe we can get a few topics running on different aspects of signalling Once again welcome to Trainboard.
Paul, Yes the signals are intergrated with the door. But if something does go wrong the dispatcher can open it or an employ at the tunnel can manually open it.
Charlie T. Engineer/Conductor BNSF based at Aurora IL. Currently working "on the ground" cuz I ain't got the "seenie" to work as an engineer. I am about 17x out from being "set up". But hey, I still get paid
Mike, My uncle Tommy worked on the Moffett tunnel toward the last, then went to work building the "Million Dollar Highway" through Colorado. My dad took us over this highway the first summer it was opened to the public, but uncle Tommy had taken us way up in the mountains the year before, to watch the steam shovels carving the roadway out of the side of a mountain across the river from where we sat. We camped there and stayed a week with the work crew in the CCC campsite. That was another big thrill when I was a little boy! (I don't think they will allow that today).
Do volunteers for a museum count? If so, I've been an student engineer/fireman and brakeman for about 4 years now for the Indiana Transportation Museum.
Watash, I don't suppose you have any photos from back then. I've been over that highway several times also. Once in a snowstorm. Major
