Hi to all, Some of you know that I have been working on Atlas N-18 for almost a year now. You can visit it at: http://moshken.smugmug.com/ I am not done yet and far away from that. I noticed that the whole thing is small; the trains go in one small area round and round. So I made another 4x8 benchwork to go next to one that I have now which is 4x7. Do you have any interesting ideas, layout or suggestions that I can use so the whole set will be more interesting? I sincerely appreciate your kind help. Thanks. Mo
Could you give us a floor plan and where you antisipate putting the extension? I'd hold off on the 4x8 and think in terms of a door size. This may make for easier construction. Over all I'd suggest trying to get some scenery in and wiring done before adding more track. This will give you an idea of how to design the next part.
Mo...if you have the available space to do a 24" shelf layout around the rest of the room, you could always do a spur off the track going to the top portion (exit table at the far right rear curve) and return from the left side of the table via the long siding in front of the control panel. Cam
Mo- Go around the room. I strongly suggest it. It is hard enough to scenick on the 4x6 as it is. You will also find that, depending where your control panel is, you may only have two exit points to any extension. Both are on block #9. On the southeast side, at the turn into the tunnel, I put in a turnout to permit exit and entry at that point. If you want exits at the upper level, you will be blocking access to the area under turnout #22 for derailed cars in the tunnel. Exit points near turnout #6 or near turnout 23 will not work (on my layout, anyway) because of clearance issues and slope. I am fiddling now with XtrkCad to design my expansion.
Mo, Here is a site where someone built the same layout and had an extension on the side. http://community.webshots.com/album/478406200tIyogy
Moshken: Make an extension from the Atlas N-18 using one of the sidings and add the addition to that layout from that point. "Find a wheel and it goes round and round".... Stay cool and run steam.....
Thank you so much Claudio for this. I don't know how did you find it, but he has an impressive layout. I wonder how can we contact him to ask some questions. Thanks again.
Staying at the 30 to 36 inch width allows for placing against the side of the room and allows reasonable reach to the other side. The usual extension would come off a corner creating an L pattern and can represent a branch line etc.
#4000 has succinctly stated the only way that you will have access for doing any decorations or correcting operational "mistakes" unless you have extremely long arms or are Spiderman.
If you place the layout so you have isle space of all sides, then you can create more options for an extension of the original layout. Stay cool and run steam......
Hi, I have two places on Atlas N-18 to expand. What I am looking for is an interesting plan layout to go with it. Thanks. Mo
Thanks. I think I mentioned it the table is 4x8. I hope I understood your question by floor space, if not please let me know. Thanks. Mo
So you have the 4x6' Atlas N-18 and then have an additonal 4x8' space. Make an "L' shaped layout out of all your space. Stay cool and run steam....

Sometimes it easier to lay out the track for the addition in the space you have. You know where the link is on the N-18 layout. I've done that for years. Stay cool and run steam....
