I voted ME C55, but I use Unitrack at the moment... I'll be using the ME track, or maybe the new Atlas C55 for my new layout that I'll be starting on before long.
Squirrelkinns - the question should probably have been worded what kind do you mostly use, I use Kato and snap track but mostly Kato
Well, it looks like the results are as follows: #1 was Atlas code 80 @ 45% Tie for 2 Kato and Peco 55 @ 15% each Tie for #3 ME 55 and Peco 80 @ 7% The big surprise to me was no users of Atlas snap track. Altas 55 was not surprising because of its newness
I will make a clarification on my vote. I use Atlas code 80 on my home layout because it is inexpensive. I use Peco code 55 on my N-Trak modules because my N-Trak club requires this. I would like to use Atlas code 55 on my new home layout but am waiting to see if it will cause a problem with my cars/engines. If it does, I WILL NOT CHANGE OUT THE WHEEL SETS!!!! I will just stay with the code 80. Bob
I should also clarify my vote. I use Peco Code 55 on my NTrak and ONeTrak modules, I used Micro Engineering Code 55 on my last Layout and I will use a combination of new/used Micro Engineering and new Atlas Code 55. Cheers. Terry
Clarifying votes? Ok here's mine I use Peco code 55 because I got tired of waiting for the ATLAS code 55.
I voted for Atlas code 80 because I'm starting out with it. As I get better, I'll switch over to the code 55- until then, I'm painting, weathering and ballasting the track to try to digsuise the rail height.
i too , use atlas code 80 track and peco code 80 turnouts , after painting the code 55 is not worth the $ and possible having to change wheelsets!!!!!
The lower profile of Atlas Code 55 is not a problem for me as I started changing out all my oversize and standard MT wheelsets out to low profile back in 1989 and completed the task in 1998 (total 779 peices of rolling stock) and continue to do so as I pick up new items. Many of my customers will not use the new Atlas track because they are allready so far along on their layouts that it makes no sense replacing already layed (and in many cases ballested) track with something new. Two of my customers have so many Micro Trains cars, that to change over to low profile will be a major undertaking and will not build their new layouts with the new track, while at least 3 more (all of whom have between 100-350 Microtrains) have allready started to change out to low profile. Several others, all relatively new to N scale and, having decided use Code 55, have decided to go with the new Atlas Product while, about half will go to, or remain with Peco or Micro Engineering. Cheers. Terry
Okay , if everybody is cofessing ,I will too. I have only built my layout switchyard so far and I used Kato Unitrack because I didn't want to install 33 switch operators under the deck. However I did have a lot of work to do in leveling the yard to get rid of the high Unitrack roadbed, but I still think it was worth it for the easy wiring and flawless operation of the switches. I can live with the rail joiners and am learning how to camoflauge them with ballast.
Why bother? If you look at the Unijoiners, you'll notice raised ties, though they're not painted tie brown. I've found that Testor's Rubber is a great match for the ties. Since I model the BNSF, I needed Mauve ballast so I painted matte medium right on the unitrack and sprinkled Arizona Rock and Mineral Mauve ballast onto it while it was still wet. I then sprayed it with water to make sure the glue got into the ballast. You can see the results here.
After voting, as I suspected, Atlas Code 80 flex is #1. That's what I used, although I'd like to try either Atlas or Peco C55. My turnouts are a mixed bag of Peco C80 Insulfrog, Atlas Snap-switches with the solenoid cut off, and Atlas Custom Line. Atlas T/O are equipped with Cabooose Ground Throws. What bugs me is that you've got to paint/weather the rail and ties to make them look realistic. Surely somebody can manufacture flex and turnouts with darkened rail ties? Bear in mind I'm not familiar with Micro Engineering and other track brands.
