Nice photo, Russell. Almost looks like it was taken yesterday.

    Great Prince Albert tobacco sign!

You got that right! Double-sided, maybe even porcelain, and the signpost itself is finely crafted ironwork.

Assuming nobody's used it for target practice..:sneaky:

I would bet that it is porcelain. Target practice... I'd like to take their weapon and shove it up......

I sure remember doing things like this for kids. Fixing bicycle tires, swim tubes, etc, etc.....

Now that's a nice snapshot of the past. Even the kids are cleanly dressed! And have decent haircuts!

I like the look of that air pump.

Now this is my kind of gas station. Apparently you could just get your liquor and your gas in the same place and toodle on down the road. Waco, Texas, 1939.

Those are the beginnings of ethanol, Russell. Before they realized that it's supposed to go in the tank, instead of getting the driver tanked.:)

What the heck is this 'East Texas' stuff, which is cheaper than regular? Is that some kind of no-lead white gas?

I sure would like to see a color version of that sign. I'll bet it was quite a rainbow.

The very first Texaco retail station was in Houston, Texas. Here it is in around 1920.

When I was a kid in the 70s and 80s, Gulf was pretty big around here in north Texas. Mobil, Texaco, Phillips66 and Exxon were the other big players.

The crossroads near my house had an Exxon, a Gulf and a Mobil at three corners. My dad always stopped at the Mobil and when they relocated to a bigger station on the fourth unused corner he followed them. I remember the old Mobil site remained vacant for a long time.

I also remember two regionals that had a small presence here: Champlin and Lucky Lady. Lucky Lady's color scheme of red, green and white was very similar to that of Diamond Shamrock, a large regional that grew in the late 80s to eventually become Valero.

Although I can't recall any of their gas stations, Arco had a large tank farm nearby as well as a regional headquarters in a Dallas skyscraper. The Arco logo was very distinctive on the tank closest to the highway and to the Burlington-Rock Island main which crossed overhead.
