Got another Huron and Eastern shot this week. Old friend 3036 was back in town, this time with 3038. They tied up at the elevator overnight, then headed for Brown City in the morning.
An old favorite memory. Forty years ago. Lousy slide scanner and a shot into the sun, but that was the only way... New Westminster, BC. A pair of BN NW5 units:
Trying to recall. I believe it was originally intended to house a steam generator. Otherwise it would really serve no purpose.
That is correct, a steam generator was in there for use while switching passenger trains and setting them up before the road power got to the train.
I'd forgotten about it, but that is the case. Detroit's Fort Street Union Depot operated them just for that purpose.
I wanna say I recall one of these was used on the Wenatchee-Oroville, Wa passenger run back in Great Northern days until the mid-fifties. Short hood had a steam generator for passenger use. I wanna say they were used on branchline passenger runs back in Minnesota as well?
"Last of a Breed" A unique wooden underpass for a dirt road in north-central ND, just a few miles from Max is among the last of its breed.
In scanning my slides, I'm finding that using software to clean dust spots is the most time-consuming part of the process. I clean the slides well with a soft brush and air puffer before scanning, but plenty of specks remain sometimes. My scanner has Digital ICE technology that uses electronic magic to delete dust spots, but when scanning slides it works only with Ektachrome and not Kodachrome. This is a well known limitation with Digital ICE; Kodachrome's film base is unique.
