A couple of weeks back I kicked off the Weekend Proto Fun with a cool looking Patriot Rail engine that was numbered D-32. Ever since then, it was bugging me that I had seen units that were numbered like that before. Well, I finally remembered where. It was on the TO&E at DeQueen Arkansas back on Nov. 24, 1989 Here's TO&E D-14 And TO&E D-25
A critter shunting cars about at the GATX plant in Hearne, Texas on a dreary February day back in 2006.
From 09/24/1997, CR advances auto racks west past BE Tower on the former NYC. The train is headed toward Toledo. The line is foreground leads on to Cincinnati and St. Louis. Berea was a busy spot on the NYC, PC and CR, and it remains so today with NS and CSX on hand. BE has since closed, but still stands. Ya gotta love the NYC's tri-color signals and trademark cantilever signal bridge. These are gone today, replaced with a modern bridge and Vaders.
I'll go a couple of months at a time without catching a NS local, but was fortunate enough to catch two this week. H99 heads West towards the quarries in Annville. Thursday, 5 January 2023, Wyomissing JCT on the NS Harrisburg Line.
This week's photo from late 2013 is a continuation of last week's story. Some of these units are still on the railroad, but in one case, the ending was not so happy. The lead unit is HESR 2029 (ex CORP 3153), a GP38AC. The second unit, 1959 vintage GP9 HESR 1721, Formerly Minnesota Northern 1471 was a railfan favorite. Unfortunately, it was not a favorite with Genesee and Wyoming, who scrapped it around 2014. It looks like the third unit is ex Central Michigan 8804, a GP38AC. The fourth is HESR 3038, a GP40-2LW, the first HESR locomotive to be repainted in G&W orange. The fifth is one of HESR's four orignal GP38-2's (can't tell which one) that came from P&LE in 1993.
Probably a sibling of the two here, 400775 and just peeking into the picture at right, 400774: Somewhere beneath the palimpsest of patches on the Minot unit, it could even be one of these! My Dad's photo, October 1982.
Under a clear evening sky begins the long wait for a call. This sat for around 24 hours before getting a call to go east. Which let me get these nice pictures, here is the UP 7002, a C44ACCTE (GE Model AC4400CW).
