In the early 1990s I kit bashed an N scale 6-6-4 Pullman out of a Con Cor car. No sooner had the paint dried than Kato brought out their first smooth side train cars. Of course, one of them was a 6-6-4 Pullman. I managed to acquire an undecorated car and painted the same shadow line scheme which I had applied to the Con Cor car I had bashed. I had used a pencil to "draw" the lines on the side of the car. In this photo you can see the end of the Con Cor car on the left with the Kato car in the middle. A few years after I took this photo Kato did this paint scheme. Much better job than I did of course.
My yard got busy, so overtime ran into night time. An ongoing project is adding lights to the layout for eventual night time operation.
I managed to finish a couple of cars this week! Exactrail PS 4427 Kit, painted with Scalecoat II Reefer White and lettered with Oddballs Decals. Con-Cor Greenville 60' Boxcar Kit, changed the wheelbase from 41' to 46' to match the prototype, added A-Line Sill Steps, and extended Couple Boxes for the end of Car Cushioning. Painted the car with Scalecoat II Boxcar Red and lettered with Mark Vaughn Decals. The D&TS used these cars to haul bumpers from a plant in Monroe, MI or glass from Toledo, OH to various Ford Assembly plants. Thanks for looking! Rick Jesionowski
Russ, didn't the Santa Fe paint other cars like this? I seem to remember a magazine article that talked about heavyweight baggage cars painted similarly.
Yes, the Santa Fe painted most of their smooth side light weight cars plus many of their heavyweight lounges, diners and business cars. Other railroads to adopt shadow line paint schemes were the MKT, Frisco, Burlington and Louisville and Nashville. Here is a shot of my kit bashed 6-6-4 and a heavyweight diner that I painted.
Candy, I want to preface an upcoming observation by saying that you are a very talented young lady and you have posted many scenes now that are top notch for sure. I am not trying to be suggestive or naughty but when I look at the young lady on the billboard and see the eyebrows, eyes, and nose area, then look at you avatar I see a real resemblance. Could it be ? ? Your work is awesome ! Carl
Carl,.. THANK YOU ! I found that ad on line back a few years. I saved it until I found the right scene for it. She does look a bit like me though
