And a thread for all us amateurs who try to copy Tom Mann's professionally weathering work I basically used Tom's article in the latest Z-Track magazine for a guide line and reference on making this. Here is my first attempt on a Marklin tank car. First I added some lettering that I made my self for another tank car. Then I applied a cote off diluted white paint with my airbrush. And sealed it with dull coat. And here is the first application off rust and weathering. I used Acrylic Burnt Umber diluted with isopropanol. The white on top is just iopropanol with a hint off black paint that made the dull coat react with it. There is also some red rust chalk mixed in some places with the Burnt Umber.
Here I have made some more details on especially on the rust part. I think I got a little bit better now. And I think I will now give it the final dull coat so seal it all off.
Very nice Torsja! I like the way the trucks and ends are all rusty, and the fading looks great! I would not want to bum a ride on that car! I did a few cars with the sunbleached fading tecnique first: Then I downloaded Tom's weathering guide and did this following weathering patterns of these cars from a few photos I found online:
Are you kiddin' me!! Is that Z or did you flip an N sideways?!! Wow! Fabulous work!!!! Black tank, hopper and GN box are TOPs!! AND IT'S Z !! You kiddin' Me !! BIG 10-4 buddy !! Just scanned pics again and HAD to say AGAIN..IS THAT Z !!? Z, you said..pinch me..Z ?...
Torsja, looks great, I was wondering who was gonna try out those weathering tech. first. After looking closely at your work and Roberts work, the bleaching is what really makes a difference. Seems most cars are too shinney and bright, just doing that makes a huge difference. Great pictures guys!
Torsja: Great photos along with the weathering! It is all very realistic. I am also learning new techniques from you. Thanks for presenting them here.
MarklnLA: Are you a member of the ZoCal Z group? PM me or go to: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ZoCal/messages/ Join up so you can be at the December 1-2 show in San Diego or January in Anaheim. National Train Show (the BIG one) is in July '08 in Anaheim. Come see this for real.
Radium & uranium? That car should be GLOWING! Very nice effects, though with that much rust, I'd be wary of being exposed to a few hundred rems of radiation just photographing it! mg:
Kurt if correct. If I remember correctly, the red door was a replacement. Most of the MRL cars had matching blue doors. So keeping it less weathered is right on! Rob
Can anyone tell me what these hoopers are for. They look interresting for weathering etc> Thanks. http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=197832&nseq=71 ...don
At first guess............ At first guess, I would say a long string of Grain Hoppers as they are all fitted with the 4 long loading hatches instead of the small circle hatches. Hobo Tim
There ya go John. A little bit of this color, a little more here and there. And that "oh, I wonder what this will look like" stuff too. Man, anything is better than a shiney finish and factory paint. Guys are going to scream at my when I get may upcoming AZL E7's and passenger set. Nothing stays clean.
