If this should be moved to the Cattle Car, please do so. He wasn't a member here, that I know of, but Rob Carlson, who ran Altamont Press, has died. Rob was not an old man. His timetables, available at Altamont Press, were invaluable aids to railfans everywhere. Some of you probably own some of them. He also ran a RailNews forum with a discussion group, which some of you may have frequented. The last news posted on Rob's forum was on April 27, and folks began to get worried. Someone finally had authorities visit his apartment, where they found him deceased "of natural causes." I don't know any more than that, except that he was a good guy and posted a lot of my railfan photos on his news site. It makes me realize how temporary we all are on this earth. We'll all "catch the westbound" some day. RIP, Rob.
RIP The Altamont Press has a special meaning for me so this is sad to hear. They published one of my photos related to the D&H PA's coming back from Mexico. It was my honor to share the photo with Altamont Press so the passing of Rob is truly a sad day.
Heck of a nice guy and the only other person in this industry I know of that was at work on New years day.
Wow, I just saw this message and find this truly sad news as well. I hadn't visited the site recently, but had some of my photos published on the site as well. I never met Rob, but had heard nothing but good about him. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.
Since this was announced, I've not heard much about Altamont. Is someone carrying on with his business? Boxcab E50
Ken, yes, the site is back up and his timetable business is back. I'm getting so senile, without looking the site up I think David Curlee has taken it over. I'll correct that later if wrong. Larry Grant continues to soldier on with an every day except Sunday railroad news report. I enjoy that site. Not nearly as much traffic as here, but there are always heated discussions about the future of the Northwest Pacific RR and other northern California stuff. :teeth:
