Looking sharp- But, hey, send them back north! I'm sure CN can find a train to use them on in Wisconsin!
Chuck, Nice picture. I am also seeing a lot of foreign power on the UP line through the DFW Metroplex. It is nice to see some variety from the standard "Borg Yellow". I have seen quite a few NS units lately in the Arlington Bop yards. On a side note: What part of the metroplex do you call home? And, do you have a layout?
My office is in sight of the UP line in Arlington. Like Mike, I see mostly NS units on run throughs here, with a smattering of everything else. Like you, I don't recall seeing WC before, although that train had to have passed my office just an hour or less before you took that pic. As with Mike, let us know where you are.....we occaisionally do a train related lunch and can always use another in the group.
And for you CSX fans, here is what was coupled to the front of the WC 6006: Mike- We are in Fort Worth and we just moved to the in-laws house. This summer we are planning a move to Missouri. The most recent real layout that I had was in HOn3. But that is mostly gone and I am planning on a layout in N and will still dabble in the narrow stuff!
Question for GoSteelers or anyone else... Does rail business fall off appreciably during winter months in the Northland ? I have seen WC units as well as CSX on the "yellow line" passing through El Paso. Today, I saw a CN ( AC4400 I think ) in a BNSF consist. Seems they are leasing power right now? ? ?
I have a customer looking to move a pair of the Kato WC SD-45s. I'd sure like one on a run-through train.
Chuck. Does my heart good to see real flared 45's still running around (not those 16 cylinder stand ins). Thought CN had pretty much retired all the WC units. George. How can I get in touch with your 45 flogger? grant
quote: Just for the record too, 6006 is ex-Algoma Central, so thats real far from home! I looks to me like 6006 is an ex-Milwaukee Road because of the short fuel tank. Couldn't find any info on it though. Possible Soo line aquisition? I didn't know any other roads used them like this. You learn something every day. Either way, it's pretty far from home. Jim BTW Great picture Chuck!
Here is what I got: http://algomacentral.railfan.net/images/AlgoCenRy/188_1.jpg "This is the highest number SD40-2 on the ACR. Here it is on Dec 16, 1973 at Steelton. It still has the small CNR style numberboards. Now WC 6006." I understand what you are thinking, but i thought the bell and snowhood were AC givaways. Did the MR units have those? I am a huge SOO Line fan, but I was too young to remember the Milwaukee.
Another dead giveaway on the AC unit is the Canadian Handrails. Compare them to the SD45. The 6006 has straighter handrails as Canadian units have a different type of step. They are steeper than the angled steps on US EMD's. Steelers is bang on... The bell position is another Canadian touch. grant
Steelers, Thanks for the link. I should have looked closer at the WC pic as I didn't even notice the snowhood. (how could I miss that?) You're right about the bell placement as well. All of the Milwaukee pics I've found show the headlights between the numberboards and the bell on the side. Grant, Thanks for the spotting features. Do you happen to know if any of the AC units ended up with the Dakota Minnesota & Eastern? Jim
If memory serves... DME units with short tanks are ex Milwaukee. I think they ended up in lease service still in DME Blue and Yellow. DME also ended up with some ex CP SD40's that have bells between the boards and the Canadian style steps mentioned. grant
It just goes to show that we can 'legally' run almost any road name on our layouts we choose and still be within prototype!
Chuck, Like Jeff said, if you are up for lunch sometime we wouldn't mind if you joined us. We usually meet in the north Arlington or Irving area. We meet at least once a month, sometimes more. It is usually impromptu. We are all N scalers and just enjoy talking trains and anything else that happens to be brought up. Let me know.
