Took these awhile back. Drove over to Albany after an afternoon of studying to see if there was any UP or PNWR action. While I was there a couple Amtrak commuters passed through and a UP freight picked up and left, but the PNWR units were alone and resting. A few days later I saw what I'm assuming is the Toledo Hauler? Not sure. Whatever it was, it was over 80 cars long and was being powered by 6 locomotives; #3006, 3001, 101, 102, 3002, and 2315. Which until recently was the most diesels I've seen on a single PNWR train. Click here for a shot of that freight.
The slugs 101 and 102 are usually on the Toledo Hauler now. So it's a good bet that's what you saw. Eastbound it's called the Toledo Patch.
That would be it then.. The one I saw during daylight hours was headed to Albany. That freight passes through Corvallis like clockwork at night. My apartment is about a half mile from the PNWR line and I keep track every time I hear it pass by. It amazes me how timely it is.
You really had me confused. Your NYC avatar, you "drove over to Albany", then you show logos that I doubt have ever been anywhere close to Albany, New York....:tb-err: Great photos, BTW!
I'm with Hytec--the New York Central logo and "Albany," turns out your in my territory! I had no idea the Toledo Hauler had that many cars. Have you seen the tracks between Corvallis and Toledo? :tb-biggrin:
Not really.. When I can I follow the Hauler from Corvallis to Philomath for a few miles. But doesn't the track diverge from the freeway and pretty much stay in the woods? If not, I'll have to follow it a little further next time!
PNWR Power, thanks for bringing some very nice photos of Portland and Western to TrainBoard. On my way home today I saw the 663 in Portland headed up by some of PNWR's GP39-2s, and then a UP and BNSF freight headed the other way. PNWR is my favorite of the three. You might check out Steam Powered Video's railroad atlas of the Pacific Northwest. Last I checked, it was out of print and still a little outdated, but it'll definitely show the Toledo Hauler. You can find it with a little looking online, sometimes even as new old stock. I believe the Oregon timetable put out by Altamont Press also has some info on the Toledo Hauler, including the frequencies used by the crews.
Nice shots! Back in the winter of 2006/2007 I was working in Salem, OR at the local hospital. I had an apartment which overlooked the former OE line at the south end of Minto siding, and could see and hear them coming through. Made several trips to the "squarehouse" down in Albany, capturing the motive power there. It was the first time I ever saw an SD7 (the ratty-looking SP diesel doing the yard switchingin Albany).
1501.. Quite the beast. Southern Pacific paint scheme, Willamette & Pacific lettering, and Portland & Western logos.
Nice to see a old SP SD still in service. Too bad the P&W wouldn't give it a coat of new orange paint.
She may be guly-looking, but she sure gets the job done! And as for paint- even tho I'm not an SP fan, I'd rather see it in Black Widow colors myself. BTW- is the Maersk SDP40F still being used? (Note to Santa Fe fans: Yes, I know ATSF got this unit & rebuilt it, but I can't remember what the model designation is, so I refer to what it came out of EMD as).
