In our "Coffee Break" feature this week, Ztrains.com is highlighting a motor replacement alternative for the Marklin 0-6-0 chassis using a coreless motor. Nigel Lawton, who runs the site offering this motor / companion resistor / shaft adapter, has just now posted 3 videos showing this motor in action. It appears very quiet and very smooth... no apparent cogging even at slow speeds.

    Hi Jürg,

Thanks for the comments! It's actually quite a bit of fun to poke around, see what's new in Z then highlight it for others to read about. I find the interviews are also fun to conduct, and I get to talk to some pretty interesting people.

I can see Ztrains making a real shift towards this kind of content in the future. One of my next "Z Scale Guest" interviews is going to be with a museum outfitter, the people who design and build museum displays. Though not directly Z scale related... I really enjoy dramatic presentations, and we all tend to put so much effort into our Z scale work... it will be interesting to see how the professionals present their work.

It does look like a neat project to take on.

Nigel just redid these videos in the avi format for Windows... he also added a bit of text that is mainly comprised of previous responses to emails he recieved on these motors.

I had that motor in one and it wasn't as smooth. Was going to try the 10x12 motor next. I read they took the bushing out, I left it in to center the worm. I'll try taking that out first.

I wonder how hard it would be to convert Lajos SW-1 to that motor...and some DCC...Robert?

I think converting the SW-1 would be an easy enough proposition, but is that a 6v motor or 12v? If 6v I don't know how well it would work on DCC. MY SW-1 runs so well that I am not touching it. Mine can pull 17 cars, and I did not add any weight to it.

I am really interested in such replacement motor for the original Märklin, exactly this chassis.
But with the experience with the digital powered 5pol Maerklin motor with some sudden death of the decoder, I fear that it would not be simple to fire him with 12 Volt DCC.

Resistors are good, just when there is no current through it at the moment when the core is switching, there will be full 12 (or 10) Volt across the gab, and I guess nice thunderstorm inside. :lightning:

Perhaps zeners behind the decoder could be a more accurate way to take care of him.

Other thing is the fixation of the motor. Glueing for life is a solution that I dont like so much, if the motor is dead, you scrub the scrap.:embarassed:
