    Model Railroad Show

The first weekend of October is slated annually for the Lynden Lions Club Model Railroad Show, held at the Northwest Washington Fair grounds.

I took this off the chamber of commerce site of the town of Lynden. If some one lives there and reads this - tell them they should also post the times. I know on Sunday it starts latter, like at noon (unless they recently changed this).

Rick. That is where my wife grew up. I met her in Lynden, married her and took her to California. That is a quiet Dutch Community.

    Rick-

I have a friend in that area. I'll ask him if he knows the times.

    Dick-

Our family had friends in Lynden. They would always bring their beautiful horses down to the Puyallup Fair.

I've been wracking my brain all afternoon trying to recall their family name. And wishing I'd remember how our family got know theirs. Draft horses with their manes and tails all done up. They'd be pulling a nice wagon. My brother and I got to ride in it a few times. This was long ago. I suppose about 40 years now. If still with us, those folks would have to be up there in years. At least my parents (in their 80's) age now?

    Boxcab.
Verdune (Standard Oil) had one set of Clydesdale horses. There were also 3 or 4 others up there. My wife said it has been so long since we lived up there, she isn't sure of the name. If we could have made it up there the wife would have celebrated her 50th High School reunion this summer.

They used those horses to haul oil in the summer and take kids on sleigh rides in the winter

I don't have to tell you guys what a great little community Lynden has been and is. There are now some larger malls close to Lynden - to get around the Sunday closures of everything commerce in the town itself. And I'm sure you ate at the great Dutch restaurants there.

The horses you talk about came up to Vancouver for our Provincial Fair (like the State fair) every year. Some idiot changed the entire format and all the wonderful shows that came up were cancelled, in favour of one generic show. The Clydesdale's came up every year. They are definitely one of the most expensive hobbies to run in the world. It is a million dollar hobby literally, with the price of horses, running gear and trucks to haul them. The announcer one year went over all the costs. There were about three teams that came up from Lynden.

The train show there is also one of my favourites. Its actually starting to get bigger, with lots of layouts and great stuff for sale. The reason this show stands out in my mind so well is that we there on one Sunday and it turned out to be the first day of bombing in Afghanistan. All the American radios were tuned to the Canadian CBC as their coverage was better than anything local. (For those not in the now, the town is about a twenty minute drive from the CAN/AM border.

    Dick-

That could be it. I'm still drawing a complete blank in remembering anything. As my grandfather would say- "Too much water has gone under the bridge....."

    Rick-

Just received this message back from my friend:

"The Lynden show is this coming weekend, Oct. 4 & 5. It is open Sat. 10 to 6 and Sunday
    noon to 4."

    Hopefully this will help.

Yes it will help. I know the Sunday time as my son and I showed up around 10:30 on that fateful day the bombing began in Afghanistan. We went in as no one was at the door taking tickets - most were listening to the radio. I figured the bombing had affected the show.

It wasn't until latter that we figured out we had "crashed" the show too early; it didn't start until noon.
