Welcome aboard likeke27!!!! I have yet to see the MP, Katy or Bush units in person. Seems they keep these units to their home tracks or something as I get the WP one all the time here in Nor-Cal. We are waiting for EMD to start the next batch of UP ACes before we can get the DRGW, CNW and SP heritage units. From what I'm understanding, it will be a little while longer as EMD is working on other orders.
Here is the latest on UP Heritage units, Per John Bromley, former director of PR at UP, now he is director of special projects at the UP Museum. ..."I'll be looking for photos of the various heritage units for the 2008 Union Pacific calendar. The UP 1982 (MoPac) and 1988 (Katy) are being shifted from their current Houston-Fort Worth run to a Houston-Yard Center, Chicago assignment to give them more exposure. The 1983 (WP) currently is at Hinkle, Oregon and will be returned to the Salt Lake City-Roseville manifest assignment. No definite word on the next three yet, but we're getting close on the DRGW unit. JB ..." ....A respondant on this on this other board then stated... Can't wait for the C&NW unit to come out!! ..."Looks like that will be mid-July. JB..." then someone asked about SP Heritage unit.. ..."There will be a Southern Pacific unit as the last in the series. JB..." ..finally someone then asked...if they were going to mix up the orders with GE... ..."Sorry, no. All the heritage units will be SD70ACs. JB..."
I saw Mopac and Katy in St.Louis yesterday the 18 of March running together.I couldn't tell what direction they went at Lennox Tower though.
I'd like to see BNSF one-up them by doing an historic series with actual historic paint schemes instead of this foo-foo "CYA" dreamed up stuff !!!
I talked to my dad the other day who is a conductor up in Cheyenne, WY. He told me that the UP is having an open house to unveil the D&RGW heritage engine. Not sure where. I am guessing North Yard. I believe he said the open house is for employees and will be on June 17th. Maybe a few railfans can sneak down there too! I will try and keep you posted when I find out more.
They don't have to, the Heritage schemes are totally GN inspired and there's still plenty of BN/ATSF paint roaming the rails to make that a waste.
Recently (yesterday) read a report of another primered SD70ACe on the move. Could be the possible DRGW on its way to the paint shop. Hmmmmm.
Hey John..I saw the same thread on another forum... apparently the new Heritage unit will commerate the DRGW...at UP's yard in Denver..the middle of June...so I guess the 17th is probably a good date.
Hopefully this is it but I've also read otherwise. Can't wait to see what the "artists" have come up with for the Grande.
Agreed. These so-called "heritage" schemes are not appealing for me. They have virtually nothing to do with "heritage." mg:  Boxcab E50
On the flip side, I have no desire to see 20+ year old paint schemes on modern locos. It's no different then a freelancer pretending that say the WP took over instead of the UP, what would their scheme look like now. I mean seriously, some of the old schemes in question would look butt ugly on an ACE.
The word "heritage" implies history. Older. Something from the past. Thus, a "heritage" paint would be of the bygone times. If a newer scheme is applied to newer engines, then it cannot correctly be termed "heritage." As it has none. It doesn't even honestly commemorate the predecessors. Personally, I'd prefer the older paint. They used a little more effort, more imagination. The stuff they grind out today, is simply utilitarian. Boring. Stereotypical of those who come up with these bland facades. Boxcab E50
