OK, I need to find a good resource to help me paint and decal these Peco wagons and vans as they would have looked in the mid 1950s. I have located a few web sites that show some similar cars that have been restored but was wondering what else is out there. Thanks
Like the Pannier tank with the GWR Shirt button style logo! Have a look at the Historical Model Railway Society website at : www.hmrs.org.uk Remember most of the wooden bodied stock in the '50s was real faded, dirty and down at heel. Hope this helps! Regards Chris Ibbotson
Thanks, I found some good color photos that show how severely I need to weather the cars. The locomotive is a stock Bachmann/GarFar engine. So far it runs fine. I was walking around Edinburgh last summer and stumbled on Harburn Hobbies. I could not leave empty handed so picked out a little train to bring back to Texas.
Hiya Chris, long time no see! Russell, In the 50's, these would likely all be painted in BR schemes, in general fitted (vacuum braked) wagons were bauxite (brown) but unfitted (handbrake only) were light grey. Numbers were at the bottom left, in white on the bauxite and white-on-black-panel on the grey. There's a few useful pics on this site here: http://gallery6801.fotopic.net/ Try these sections http://gallery6801.fotopic.net/show_collection.php?id=77779 http://gallery6801.fotopic.net/show_collection.php?id=21632 http://gallery6801.fotopic.net/show_collection.php?id=21606
Thanks Martyn, Those are great sights for what I want and the color information fills in what the black and white photos don't show. During the summer of 1970, I spent some time at the University of Exeter. As I recall there was a rail yard below the dorms on the other side of New North Road where they shunted these little wagons around all night. A lot of slamming and squealing wheels to sleep by.
Yeah! The yard is still there and still in use, but these days gets far fewer wagons banged about (they are much bigger wagons though!) You would have only missed steam such as your model by 5/6 years or so! Exeter itself had a big rebuild in the mid 80's so all the semaphore signalling and complicated track went. Exeter college is still there as well!
