U.P. Train Derails On Northwest Side Of Tucson
TUCSON, AZ -- Several railroad cars jumped the tracks Friday night near I-10 and Avra Valley Road. No injuries were reported.
At least eight railroad cars rolled from the tracks around 19:00.
We're told two vehicles were involved in the accident. One full-size pick-up truck was crushed by the empty cars, but whoever was inside got out.
Northwest firefighters were on scene checking the railroad cars for leaks or hazardous materials and they did not find anything in the cars.
Union Pacific railroad officials estimated it would be some time Saturday morning before all the cars are removed.
"It's definitely going to take some time to get the cars removed from the scene," says Cheryl Horvath of Northwest Fire. "As to how long that's going to take, I don't know. But right now it's not affecting I-10 at all. We're able to keep the interstate open so traffic is able to come and go." The frontage road on both sides of the interstate was completely blocked off. Union Pacific officials tell us the cause of the accident is under investigation. - KOLD-TV13, Tucson, AZ
