Hi, I believe this is my first post but have been reading a lot prior to posting. I am building a n scale layout currently we are planning on approx 135 feels of track with two expansions in the future. I have been researching three different dcc systems and potential power requirements and this is where I need help. Below is our tentative thoughts for requirements.

We want the ability to run 6-8 locos at most, thinking running 3-4 most of the time. Most locos will be purchased with sound.

Want switch control via dcc as there is a planned total of 28 switches when everything is done and finished.

Would like to have turn table control. We have a cornerstone 130’ turntable.

I have looked at digitrax evo, nce power pro and the esu ecos and can control. We have ruled out the cab control for it lacks the ability to control a turntable. Originally we were set on the esu ecos but my wife wants the ability of hand held throttle vs the base station. What is your opinions of a system to do the above and how many amps of power do you think I need? Would like something with more ease of use but versatile at the same time.

Thanks in advance for you help and opinions and information.

What does your layout look like? If it is U-shaped or all visible from one point, you could get away with a command center. If it is designed for you to walk with your train, as most large layouts are, you will need a handheld throttle. The ones that plug into ports on the layout fascia are cheaper, but once you try a wireless model, the extra cost is worth it. My top 3 would be NCE, MRC, and Digitrax (not in that order). I know ESU makes good sound decoders, but I would avoid European systems just because people here in the US are not as familiar with them, so servicing them or getting help with them may be more difficult.
My club uses the MRC Prodigy system. I would recommend that one because it has a pretty good wireless controller, and a WiFi module so you can use the WiThrottle app on your phone to control the train. For a large layout, this can really cut down on controller costs since the app is free. However, connection can be kind of sketchy, especially if there are more than 5 phones connected. For a really large layout, you may have to develop a more complicated WiFi system with multiple routers to overcome that problem.
If you prefer a physical controller and not an app, get one or two full feature controllers (those come in the starter kits you are probably looking at). Keep those for programming locomotives, but when you expand, look for function-only controllers. Those only have address and function keys, so it gets rid of unnecessary keys during operating sessions, making them simpler. They are usually cheaper. I know Digitrax makes them, I’m not sure about NCE.
Overall it is up to you. If you have a local club, see what they use and try it out during and open house or something. That way you know how they work before you choose a system.

The easy answer here is to find some other N scale guys that are in your area and see what they are running. Most likely you will become friends and want to see each others layouts and run them and if you have the same systems you can use your controllers at each others house. I live in NCE country so that is what made sense for me to buy. good luck have fun.
