Brad -- I was really worried I might get sick after that show, too! But, somehow, I didn't. First one in a long time. I did make sure to wash my hands every couple of hours, and was also very conscious of keeping my hands away from my face. At least we didn't have the "sea of humanity" one gets at the larger shows (except for the last morning).

My 4 year old starts preschool this coming fall. Not looking forward to finding out how many of us can get sick at one time.

Gyms are probably just as bad . I've seen a lot of people that don't wipe the machines down after they use them , no consideration ! I got into the habit early on of wiping the hand areas off before I use each machine , haven't been sick in over a year ! ....so tomorrow I'll probably get sick .......

One of those laws of probability? (Now that you've jinxed yourself. ) Something similar to 'no good deed goes unpunished?'

I got my flu shot last December. Everyone I knew at work and some family members all came down with the flu the past few months. I was fine. But if you get sick after getting the flu shot, you might have another illness that isn't necessarily the flu (but might share some flu-like symptoms).

Well, it is more than 2 weeks since my long trainshows and grandkids weekend in Livingston-Helena and then Great Falls. Thank the good Lord, no flu, cold or any such thing.

    Very true.

Whatever it is, I find I have better luck not focusing my immune system on their guess about which strain will be active that winter, but try to keep healthy so it's ready for anything.

But that's my immune system. Everyone's different!

The flu, cold, and pneumonia viruses are real in the world of caring for oneself. I think I mentioned this before but there are precautions you can use. Some are psychological. In other words you think you are protecting yourself but you aren't. Example of such is those hand washes that claim to sanitize the hands but actually dry out your skin making you even more vulnerable to picking up something. The key to any hand cleaning, is lift and remove. Soap and water is the best way to lift and remove and if you can't get to water then towelettes

In the hospital we use what has been called, "Universal Precautions". You can get copies of these procedures we use by contacting your local hospital or Dr's Office and ask for them. Then you need to use them in your own personal world of human contact.

You can't protect yourself against air-born pathogens as they are usually smaller then the air-lets through the various kinds of masks. Although surgical masks will slow them down considerably.

Cover your mouth when you cough. Wash those hands that cover the mouth. Remember the hands are at the heart and soul of protecting yourself.
They don't care what they carry to your face or anyone Else's hands. Only you can prevent..well...Old Smokey was right but this isn't about forest fires. This is about protecting your health. Only you can do that.

I wore two hats before retirement. One as a mortician and/or funeral director and the other as a Hospital Administrative Assistant Director. Having served on the Infection Control Committee at the pleasure of our administrator. In both professions, we are extremely concerned about the path of disease and how best to protect ourselves.

    Hope that helps.
