Today, May 10th 2002 is the anniversary of the golden spike being driven at Promontary Point Utah. The beginning of it all for both our country and our rail system. Happy Birthday!

Well, actually, it was Promontory Summit. Promontory Point is a peninsula on the Great Salt Lake. It's a common mistake made by folks. Heck, they even got it wrong on "Jeopardy" :D

BTW, the area where the last spike was driven is a National Historical Site near the tiny town of Promontory, northwest of Ogden. It's now isolated from the rail network after SP built the Lucin Cutoff across the Salt Lake.

Thanks for pointing that out. I think that the reason that I and many others make that mistake is because the media and even some books always use "point" instead of "summit"
