First a diminutive 0-4-0 saddle tank. Kitson design for Cardiff Railway, built 1893. Wheels 3' 2.5" dia, weight just over 25 tons!

    Photographed at Cardiff East Dock.

Yeah, very cute. I was lucky to get a picture of it whilst it was around, it was a one-off (at least in BR days).

Next, an 0-4-2T. These 1932 built Collet locomotives were designed for light branch line duties, and were Push-Pull fitted to operate with a driving trailer. This one photographed at Gloucester.

Alan, very nice. You say "Whilst it was around." Was the little engine scrapped, or is it still with us?

I have a bunch of nice Black and White post cards of steam in Scotland. However I am having second thoughts about about scanning them in and posting them here. I don't have Joanes Publications permission to do that. [IMG] Rats. Really classic stuff too. :(

Jim, I fear that the little 'un was scrapped :( At least I have never seen any evidence of it being preserved.

Here is another 0-4-0 saddle tank from south Wales. P & M 1152, Peckett design of 1907. A bit heavier at around 33 tons!

Alan, what do you mean "driving trailer"?do you mean the third trailing axel is driven?
On another note regarding english loco's I have a book here somewhere,"Crewe Works" I think it was spelt & I'am still totally amazed at the way they built these loco's in the early 1900's.From the forgings to castings to the machine shops, really eye opening stuff, cant find it at the mo.,better go find & have another peruse...........

    A rough translation would be:

Driving Trailer = Push-pull cab car.

The driver works in the cab car when that is leading, and he has a brake valve there plus (I think I recall) a cable that runs back to the throttle on the loco. The fireman stays with the loco ensuring that he has steam.

They might have only run with one or two coaches in revenue service, but last August we had a ride behind one on the Dart Valley railway, with six coaches! They pull alright for a little engine! [IMG]
