Hi again, another quick question. It seems the many different roads out there interchanged their rolling stock a lot (you see UP, SP, Maryland, CSX, Burllington, ATSF all in the same consist being pulled by BNSF for example). But with passenger cars was this ever the case? Did ATSF ever hookup to UP passenger coaches for example, or were railines a bit more selfish with this type of traffic. I can think of few reasons why you would ever interchange like that, but I am curious to know if it happened. I see UP pull Amtrack coaches every know and then...
Justin, Frieght railroads interchange their freight and it stays in the same car that way it moves and isn't stuck in yards being transfered between cars. Passenger trains for the most part stayed on home rails however there were many cases of Through cars mainly sleepers from the east going to LA/SANFRAN or any other place. There were many many tours that ran on like the GN from NY and they were kept in the cars they got on, so the Western Star (GN's #2 train) to Glacier National Park. This is just a small number of times passenger cars went on foriegn rails. If you have any questions write me at bn9900@yahoo.com.
Hi Justin. I can site at least one more example of Pullman and Slumbercoach "run-throughs". The Atlantic Coast Line ran sleepers from Illinois Central, Pennsylvania R.R. and occasionally the B&O through to Miami and back in the early sixties. I saw them myself railfanning with my Grandfather, who lived right next to the ACL tracks.
All the time! Well, at least Pre-Amtrak era... The NP's North Coast Limited, and GN's Empire Builder *The NP Mainstreeter and GN Western Star; both sister transcon trains also combined beyond home rails* were both terminated at Minneapolis and St Paul by their own motive power. After that, they were combined on the CB&Q's rails, under Burlington power en route to their respective terminations in Chicago. The CB&Q also did the same with the California Zephyr, starting on Burlington rails and power from Chicago, then to Rio Grande & Western Pacific to it's termination in Oakland, CA. These are just some of the numerous examples that existed, but these are my favorites...
