The OLD PORT SHOP

I'm pretty sure all of these are digitally enhanced, so don't feel too bad. I believe he has talked about his process before.

 

I have to disappoint you, Bryan, some of Dirk`s pictures are digitally optimised, but others I shot with my I-Phone.
It is all about to catch the railroad atmosphere, which means that you sometimes have to leave the common positions and look for other angles which are closer to typical prototype pictures.

I give you an example:

A typical Z-scale picture, zooming brutally in we can create the illusion of a big railroad



Zooming out a little bit, it is still a nice railroad layout



But in real life you are highly disappointed, because then it looks more like this:



Thus, we Z-Scaler have to do a lot and have to have much fantasy in order to create a good illusion.

As you all know, the code name for "The old port shop" was OPS, any idea why we call this addition FLOPS ??

Great weathering on the structures! The trestle is extremely well done as well.
Why FLOPS? Does it mean final loop?

 

Usually Dirk is very reluctant to show layouts in progress, but I felt you should know where we stand with FLOPS:

Very inspirational and impressive!

Knowing that Dirk does not like to show layouts in progress, we on this side of the ocean highly appreciate seeing others work in progress. It gives us an understanding of the construction and details behind what it takes to create such realism. Hence the reason why there are so many YouTube videos, showing one how to do various steps to create a realistic model railroad diorama. Keep up the good work. I think we all appreciate seeing Z-scale taken to this level of realism.

What did you use for the curved ‘curb’ ? Just what I am looking for!

 

Sven, You knocked this one out of the park! Your scenery is so very realistic, you can’t tell it is a model! Excellent work you’ve created!

 

Here comes the final layout, it connects smoothly at the back of OPS. But why did we call it FLOPS? I guess you will for sure immediately grasp it when I show you the trees we are using.......
