Going to give this a try. I am posting a poll to see if you would be interested in buying a 2-6-6-6 in either C&O or Virginia colors and roughly your price range.
RK,I would think price range would be dictated by the final product, not just a question. What I'd be willing to pay is overshadowed by what I would pay, based on the final product's attributes. If it was a fantastic pulling loco, flywheel, great runner, fantastic detail, brass, whatever, the ski's the limit, but if it's poop,well....If I really,REALLY want a loco,I don't care what it costs, although I would think that for a plastic loco,$350.00+ is pushing it..
OK. So let's make this easier. A 2-6-6-6 in plastic, with the running qualities and detail of the Athearn Challenger/BigBoy, or IM cab-forward. No sound/dcc installed, but easily converted with a plug-in (like the cab-forward). I voted at $300. But there's no reason this should cost more at street price than the Challenger, Y3 from Walthers, or the IM cab-forward (e.g., about $250 street on pre-order). John C.
I also assumed this unit would be on par with the latest big steam. A good poll question is very hard to word, simply because we all read and interpret things differently. So, I think, asking the question with no qualifiers is the best way to get answers in a one question poll. Not beating you up Lou, just saying, give a guy a break... .
Well, not my prototype but like the above if it were built to the detail and running quality of the latest big steam I'd say between $250 and $300. But personally I'd rather have a Pennsy Q-2. wink:
Lack of detail in the poll I left details out for the reason stated above. I left it to the imagination of the readers. One can comment on what would make them want it and what they would expect for the price.IE: "I would only pay $300 if it was on par with the Athearn Challenger." "I dont care for DCC and sound so if I could get one for $200 for a plain jane thats fine." Key brass Allegheny
I could be a grump and so no, because I already have one. I think the price point would be in the $450 range retail, $300-350 street price if it was done. It's just not as widely known or requested prototype as the Big Boy and Challenger and the manufacture would need to hedge it's bet a little to insure a profit. Besides, the Big Boy and Challenger were a little more cost effective to manufacture because they share the same tender, cab and valve gear. Once the Challenger was done, they didn't have to start from scratch on the Big Boy. I would love to see one done but would need to have inside info so I could offload my brass before hand. At the going rate for the brass H-8, I could buy 4-5 plastic ones. BTW- Rob, which one of us is going to renumber our loco so we can run them together one day?
I'd pay about $250 street price for a well-detailed plastic version with good running qualities. But I'd only buy one. If I were modeling either road mentioned, I might go to $350, and buy three or four, as I did with the Y-3.
If you have the time, our NTrak layout will be at a small swap meet in Milford, OH this coming Saturday. http://www.queencityhirailers.com/images/PDF%20Files/10-03-13%20Saint%20Andrew%20Fllyer.pdf
Well, here's mine. I would like to see a Class A, or a Y6b done in full detail and geared low like the IM Cabforward. Dave
Having seen 1601 at the Henry Ford Museum, the H-8 is a beautiful locomotive, far more so than either the Big Boy or Challenger. Unfortunately the B&M never owned one, so I guess neither will I. :tb-wacky:
I would be in for one.....Limas biggest. Getting a great running cab forward for about $250, would make it OK to pay $300 for one.
RK I'd pay over $300.00 for 4-5 H8s IF they met the following criteria: 1. Highly detailed 2. DCC factory equipped (minimum of DCC plug ready) 3. Sound equiped 4. Micro-Trains or McHenry couplers 5. HEAVY metal body 6. Heavy duty, precision, dual, large flywheel drive train 6. Pulls 40-50 hoppers/freight I’d also like to see N&W Class A’s, WM Challengers (smaller tender) and B&O Yellowstones produced (that meet the above criteria) Atlas, Atheran, Bachmann, Con-Cor, Kato, Intermountain, Model Power, Walthers, ... are you listening (or at least reading our posts)?
The Allegheny (2-6-6-6 aka H8) is a really cool looking locomotive... and even though it is not a model that would 'fit' my typical interests in western roads... it would probably find its way into my stable of engines. That said... I would probably not pre-order unless I was sure the QUALITY was there and the price would have to be in line with the current offerings of the Cabforward, Big Boy and Challenger. Dual mode DC/DCC and sound would be a good idea, but, should be an optional. This thread made me dig-up my Spectrum 2-6-6-2 just to see how much different the Allegheny would be. It appears that the 2-6-6-2 is much too different to be a starting point for Bachmann/Spectrum to use as a springboard for an Allegheny. That said... they would likely be the one to make an Allegheny (IMHO) which would be probably be the least expensive and have features desired by most modeler (I can't believe I actually wrote that ).
I'd say you'd be looking at a starting price around $300, but I'd rather have a pair of ATSF 2-10-2's for the money. Or any decent Santa Fe steam for that matter. My own road could probably run one but I'm trying to keep away from the really big steam, I'm more looking forward to seeing what the new Spectrum 2-6-6-2 is like.
