I am fortunate to live in a place that has been visited by both the 844 and 3985 recently, and both trains were pulling, besides an extra tender or two, these lovely passenger cars in UP livery.

What I would like to know is what sort of information people have on these cars. I am looking for types, names (if they have names), numbers. Photos would be a bonus. I would like to slowly build up my own fleet in N scale to two behind my 3985.

I have poked around UP's website, and maybe I am in the wrong area, but all I can find information on are the historic locomotives.

Thanks in advance for your help,
    Adam

It looks like I am getting closer to something here. Still, I don't know exactly which are the ones most often used on consists behind 844 or 3985.

    Thanks,
    Adam

OK, here is what I have pieced together from a 1992 excursion:
Concession Car Sherman Hill, originally an RPO Baggage. Six wheel truck added to one end where HEP generator was installed.
Dome Coach Challenger, built by Pullman 1958 to ACF plan. Original number 7015.
Diner City of Los Angeles, built by ACF 1949.
Lounge Sun Valley, built by ACF in 1949. Original name Colorado River #6203.
Baggage car Western Lodge built by St Louis Car Co. as #5761, now 5779.
Baggage Car Western Star built by ACF in 1957, now numbered 5714.
Dome Coach Columbine built 1954-1956 as #7001.
Five identical 44-seat coaches built by ACF in 1954 all now named after various UP (and roads UP bought) streamline trains. City of Salina, Sunshine Special, City of San Francisco, Texas Eagle and Portland Rose.
Dome Diner, City of Portland. Built by ACF in 1955 as #8008.
    Dome Lounge Harriman, no information.

They have two business cars that have observation platforms on them. They come through SLC occasionally. I do know that when the 3985 came through a couple of years ago they had a red WP side bay caboose and an old box car with doors on the ends right behind the engine for the crew.

I am loving the information, folks!

One of those links I put in one of my messages above is to the rrpicturearchives.net collection of photos of UP passenger cars, many of which seem to have been taken in the last 10 or 20 years. I noticed at least two business cars, one of which I believe was called Feather River.

I was hoping that the City of Portland car was still around, since that is my hometown.

Looks like the 844 is going to be in Ogden in April and May. I will try to get some photos for you if you like. Here is the shcedule link if you are interested.

Adam, I rode in the City of Portland on the doubleheader in 2007 from Tacoma to Everett. A great dome car. I think the baggage car with the flag on the side is the Council Bluffs, another great car. The business cars were better than a lot of corporate conference rooms. I'll try to get the entire consist list for you. UP has a bunch of cars and they haul different groups on different excursions or business trips. :tb-biggrin:

Well, I don't have the whole list, but here are a few: Art Lockman, a REAX and maybe HEP car, St. Louis, old obs, Golden State, baggage, Missouri River Eagle, dome, Wisconsin River Eagle, dome, Idaho, a theater car. :tb-biggrin:

    Fitz,

The 2007 one is the consist I am thinking of here. We also got a visit from the 3985 right around back then, 2005 or 2006 or something like that, and it was towing a very similar consist IIRC.

It looks like I may have to do some kitbashing and relabeling and such and I am just fine with that. It's called modeling, after all, not buy-it-and-throw-it-on-the-track.

I got those car names by watching my own video of the train backing into the Tacoma station. I also caught the 3985 (with engineer Doyle) leaving Salem, so will look at that video and see if I can pick off any more names. This is interesting. As a side note, those cars are immaculate inside and out, kept in excellent shape by UP. :tb-biggrin:

Adam, I contacted John Bromley of UP. Check this out, and select "Historic Equipment Still in Use".

    Fitz,

Bingo! I was unable to find that page on the UP site.

I have been watching different Youtube videos of the 4449/844 run seeing if I can pick some names off that. It's tricky because the angle is usually oblique and the resolution low.

With these names and classifications it will make it easier for me to look up photos on the internet. It's easier to run a search for a particular passenger car than to try and run a general search for UP passenger cars but excluding all the ones that have been scrapped/sold and repainted/converted to chicken coops/lost.
