Looking again at this model........what a pure beast! While new GE's and EMD's got it where it counts performance wise, the variety and engineering that went into early units like this will always appeal to me more.
I've been quietly following this thread. All I can say is: If Hemi ever declines a commision then I'm contacting you.
I too have been silently following this thread. I was surprized a few years ago to see the U50 model return. I was fortunate back in 1980 to have been able to recogonize a good model when I seen one. For me back then having a family and starting up in model RR, about all I could afford besides buying all track and bldgs. to start a new layout, were the old Atlas models that sold for around $20. For me top end was a Minitrix model at about $24.95. To spend $44.95 on this U50 was quite hard back then, but I did it and am glad I did. Even if it has been sitting in its box most of the time since then. About all I did was change the couplers and paint the grab irons. I always did love the look of this model from the first time I laid eyes on it. At the time Con Cor also had that big turbine by UP for sale alongside the U50 for the same price, but not being a UP fan and loving the look of the U50, there wasn't much to decide on. Really good work on yours. Thanks for posting it.
Might not be a bad idea, to tap into the vast amount of talent on this board! There are many others with better talent that I possess!:shade:
Well this BIG power needs a good crew to operate it. So, I dug through the miscellaneous detail/figure box and chose two fine candidates to endure the sound of the loud U50 blowers. Both were issued ear plugs, and are ready to go!
Really looks great, JD! This thread is going to have more posts than Colonel's MoPac thread.
I lightly weathered the front end with some black streaks. I didn't think it was enough, but looking at this last photo....a little went a long way. More weathering to follow.
I actually have wanted to get into the garage and do some more benchwork, but it has been cold lately and no heat down there yet, so it's been all indoors modeling.
I know it's been awhile.....you know how life can be! LOL But yesterday I added the couplers and MU hoses to the U50. Since the U50 is always going to be a leader, I put a Z Scale coupler on the front. All thats left now is to add the air hose, and then fire up the compressor for some weathering.
What a great job JD. Just when it looks like this unit is the best, you just keep making it look better. Thanks for all the pics and sharing the master modeling skills.
