I am sure I saw a lot of cars like that in Sault Ste. Marie in 1985 (if that helps)!

I would have to check a few books but I think it was about 1975! [IMG]

The red/white scheme came into being in 1963. Some new rolling stock was painted (not quite) white and not all boxcars received the white bodies with red doors after that date - some were in BC Brown.
The boxcar above is a 40' car (which Soo probably never) and I doubt any would have been re-painted in those colours.

But, that aside, any time after 1963 should see you right. [IMG]

Hmmm, thanks Gary! I suspected it was just a bit later in the 1960s, but guess what, my era IS exactly 1963! Ooops, I guess the car I weathered has now been officially rendered as "over done".

So then this scheme on a 40 footer is a fantasy? No wonder I couldn't find much in the proto photo world! Thanks for all your help.

Rob (yankinoz) will have a better idea, Steve.

IIRC, the scheme above debuted with the Fond du Lac built 50' boxcars from around 1964.

Have a look at this web page for the HO Accurail cars custon made for the Soo Line Historical and Technical Society.

I can't remember seeing any 40' box cars in the red and white.

Steve, have you been in touch with Mike Langford? He's modelling Soo around the same time as you in N as well. He may have more specific details of equipment from that era, particularly that available in N.

Also, 1963 is a good opportunity to have plenty of maroon/gold units like RS1/3's, FA-1's (get the GN A-A set as Soo only had A units), F3/7's, GP7/9's, etc plying the rails. [IMG]

Red and White SOO Line Boxcars

What color is the red in the SOO red and white series boxcars? I want to paint a model, so I am looking for the paint colors. Thanks.

    SOO HS example.

Flash, just about any red depending on the timeframe between the paint job and that modelled. A gent in the UK has put me onto Tamiya XF-7 Flat Red (it's easier to get here than most brands) but you can use Floquil (gloss), ModelFlex or Polly S Soo Line Red. Alternatively, I believe Signal Red and Caboose Red can be a stand-in at a pinch, particularly if you are weathering the car afterwards.
From what I read in the past Soo was notorious for buying paint at the best price so colour matching wasn't high on their priority list.

Which car are you planning to paint? The MDC (Athearn) 50' FMC (or BFF?) cars are supposed to be stand-ins for the Fond du Lac-built cars. Not close but not too far for the casual observer. ;)

I'm not sure what to make. I have some modern sliding door boxcars, but no plug door boxcars. Also, no ribbed boxcars. I became interested when I saw the Micro Scale 60-1116 (SOO Line 50' Boxcars w/ Colormark variations). Even the all red CP Rail boxcar with SOO reporting marks. I don't see it available anymore on the Microscale website.

    [edit] It has been discontinued.

[edit #2] Just looked. I have Tamiya X-7 (gloss) red. The paint is good; just hope I can get the lid off.
