The (original) Diesel Spotter's Guide has some great pics of early box cabs. Memory fails as to which one, but there were a pair of diesel box cabs built by one of the Canadian roads. Rather intriguing in their original forms, they were disguised during WW2 to resemble box cars. I'm sure a few of us have built a "power car" from a box car to push along an unpowered loco. Here's a chance to do it prototypically!
I seem to remember seeing an article about some electric boxcabs in Canada, in the east, I think. IIRC they were active until fairly recently?
Well, after I have seen what you guys already done or planning to do, I was searching in my old "basement store" after any stuff that could do for some modifications. Unfortunately I found no boxcab that could be used, but I found an old 0-2-0 steamer . It was an European model that will not fit on an American railroad (mine ). Then I decided to use that piece instead, mainly with regard to a note by Gary Lewis: "WELL!....now you've proved what us steamer guys have always suspicioned....Diesels are just different looking boxcars with motors in them". Now, why not rebuild a steamer to a diesel? I removed the boiler, steam cylinders, ash tray, and some other stuff, reconditioned the firemans place, and added a "diesel motor" . On last photo you can see how well it fits in as an allround engine Here it comes: Outside the roundhouse at West End Yard A closeup At work ------------ Helge SR&WF NARA member #5

In response to HELGE about building a steamer out of a diesel, here finally is a good looking diesel. If only I could get the picture to attach. It runs so well that I may use it, unless I happen to get offers?
WELL!!!...that attempt to post an image sure didn't work. I sure wish somebody could tell me how to pictures from MY files onto this board.
The current state of afairs for the GVR's one and only (sofar) boxcab. The MT 1015 coupler you see on the front(?) did not make the final cut as they stick out further than the rapidos did.
The first boxcab was built for LIRR in the 20s for New York City Switching. This was the most poluted area and Ingersall/Rand built it as a test unit... [ 29 April 2002, 15:12: Message edited by: BN9900 ]

Johnathan - Simply Marvelous! Gary - If you would like to email me the pic , I will be happy to post it for you. Happy Railroading! <img src=http://www.trainboard.com/sigbreak.gif> Russ
Hmmmmm..... That looks so good I might have to start building one for the heck of it. Looks great catt!
I told you that you inspired me to do another! Here is a pic of one that I threw together this evening. Still missing are the details including a styrene strip along the bottom to even it out. Just wanted to show all how quickly one could be made even if it wasn't as top quality as Catt's! Russ
Gary, why not try www.fotango.com, a photo album server (free) to load your pics, and then get an image link to place here at TrainBoard with the UBB code "IMAGE" which you will find in the form when you do a reply. ----------- Helge SR&WF NARA member #5
