I thought it was time to show you some passenger service pictures. This is a relatively short train, consisting of an F7A, steam generator car, baggage car, coach and an express box car. Sometimes the train is powered with a GP9. Neither of these engines have steam generators, hence the need for the steam generator car.
Not sure I have seen a steam generator car modeled before. I saw some of those parked in Spadina Roundhouse, Toronto in 1985
WOW!!! Very well done. Realy like your layout. Do you have more pics? BTW what do you use for the big ALCO (The Century Series)?
MLW, welcome to Trainboard Agree the steam generator car is great! Would also like to know it's origins
The steam generator car was pretty much scratch-built from sheet styrene. I used a frame from a 40' box car. The trucks came from an old passenger car and were modified by cutting out some springs, adding shock absorbers and replacing the journal boxes with roller bearing journal faces. The Alco/MLW C630's are Stewart Models C630's with a lot of details added to model the CN prototypes. The biggest modification involved the trucks. The original model comes with the US Alco Trimount trucks with uneven axle spacing. The CN (and CP) units rode on Dofasco trucks that had a shorter wheelbase and even axle spacing. I had to rebuild the Stewart truck gearboxes to get the correct spacings and then add Prototype Model Industries side frames (which I believe are no longer available). The C424's are Atlas/Kato units with a few CN details added.
Very nice layout CN4008. I have a small layout (n-scale) that I currently building all by my self and it's quite a task. The number of hours that you put into yours must be stunning. Keep the photos coming, great source of inspiration.
This shot shows the head end of a grain train with an F7/RS18/F7 lash-up: Same train with view towards the grain cars: Pte St Charles caboose at end of grain train. Notice the gal hitchhiking on the highway:
This is awesome. Thank you so much for sharing this. Superb scenery and modeling. WOW!! Am I right to assume you use mainly Brass for your loco? Pte St-Charles caboose is by Sylvan, right?
None of my locos are brass; most are plastic. The only brass I have are my 5 modern cabooses: 4 Pte St Charles types (as shown above), and one Hawker-Siddeley. I have 2 Tiger Valley Alco C630's made of white metal. These are my only non-plastic locos. My plastic locos come from Stewart, Intermountain, Atlas/Kato, P2K and Athearn (repowered). I also have a pair of P1K RDC's. Any requests to view certain locos will by honoured. [ December 15, 2005, 10:31 AM: Message edited by: CN4008 ]
CN4008 I am a big fan of CN and ALCO/MLW too. That's what I model on my layout. Thanks for the info. Superb loco. I would gladly view any trains/loco/rolling stock/ scenery that you have. Great layout. Do you have a website? I' am updating mine at the moment.
I don't have a website of my own. I just keep posting pics here on Trainboard. I'll post a few more later today. Glad you enjoy my work (play?)
