Hello all, I have a problem with a recently recieved Kato SD40 (NIB) and upon inspection it seems to make a slight squelch or chirp eminating from the trucks and / or gears. What can I expect in servicing the unit and what could possibly be wrong with the unit causing it make the noise? Thank you and y'all have a good one, Justin May
Justin, I cannot imagine what would make the noises you describe But investigation is in order. Is it just one truck, or both? Could be lubrication (or lack of), burr on a gear, mis-alignment of gears, etc. Something should be evident upon dis-assembly. I do not have any untoward noises from my SD40-2's, so it would not be a design fault. My SD40's run without a hitch. The problem you observe may be due to some molding burrs in the truck gears, although this seems to be more an Atlas specialty, rather than a Kato one. Jean-Louis Simonet http://www.trainternet.org/
I had a whining noise in one of my SD40's and the problem was lack of lubricant. That's all fixed now though. Good Luck! ------------------ Craig Martyn Best Looking Models Around Custom detailing AND N scale detail parts. BLMA N Scale Detail Parts
I've been having this problem with one of my C44-9W's. It makes a high pitch wine from one of the trucks, which one i have yet to determain but its annoying . Kevin
Alan et al, The SD40 noise is more like a whine and with disassembly I located and remeidied the noise with lubrication. I used Labelle 107 and no sound can be heard whatsoever, other than the clanking of couplers along NS right of way. Thanks for the help and have a good one, Justin

Take it apart, fool around with it, lose the instructions, guess how it goes back together, and wa la! its now a perfect runner!! Good luck!
