Greetings all, Need help with scanning a photo, to allow more surrounding scenery to be included in photo. I think it's the background that's causing the trouble: Dead/dry grass etc..... I've tried scanning this particular photo at up to 300dpi, without much luck. Look at the upper right corner, and you can see where the scanner had problems picking up the background terrain. Comments/suggestions greatly appreciated! Thanks.
Keith, what brand scanner are you using? Does it have an adjustable set of margins so that you can ignore all of that other background (the black, not the background in the photo).
Ironhorseman: No, I haven't tried making adjustments to the brightness/contrast. I can try when I relocate photo though. fitz: Using an HP Scanjet 5100c scanner. The black is what I put in. Rest of photo is either groups of trees in far background, or dead/dry grass behind car and up hillside. Being out of work right now, I'll have time to experiment with rescanning photo. When I'll get to it though, I have NO clue! Appreciate the suggestions so far. Thanks.
Keith, send me a copy of that photo. I can't see it well, as I am using an "accelerator" on my dial-up connection which really pixillates all photos. If I can see it the way you do, maybe I can offer better suggestions. <fitzrr@pioneer.net>
Hey Jim .. have you heard that the 4449 is going to lead a special 3 day excursion through Montana, Wyoming this coming October? Sounds wonderful ... but will be very expensive!
Bill, Yes, I know about it, and you are right about the expense! Mike Morgan has tickets and has offered to trade off with me (ride vs. chase). I'm going back to Minneapolis/St. Paul over July 4th w/e to ride the 261/2816 double-header, so may have exhausted my railfan budget when 4449 gets out again.
I usually set the scanner to the highest setting and then modify the photo later with other tools that are better at making the adjusments. That way you start out with something large / detailed and then scale back the image size and settings.
